APRIL 2021

2 CENTURIES LATER Honoring Soldiers Who Fought for Us

The American Revolution started on April 19, 1775, with the battles of Lexington and Concord. Typically, we look back at the American Revolution in July, but the start of the Revolution

centuries ago, these people still put their lives on the line to fight for us and themselves. It’s something I’ve seen throughout my life. Though my family is not necessarily a military family, many

is also important because it started our country’s transformation. I wouldn’t say I’m an American history buff, but I still find it incredibly important.

of my relatives have joined and served in the U.S. military. My brother was part of the Marines, one

of my uncles was a Navy SEAL, a cousin was part of the Coast Guard, and both of my grandfathers were in the Navy.

Like many people I know, I watched “Hamilton” last summer on Disney+ — I tried very hard to get tickets to see the performance in person with my wife, but I never managed it. When I watched the play, I found it hard to imagine what life was like for those people nearly 250 years ago. They were individuals, farmers mostly, who traveled to this new country for a new life, then banded together to fight against the most powerful country in the world (of that time).

When I think about what every soldier has done for the country and its people, I hold nothing but the utmost respect for these individuals. They have worked to uphold what those farmers fought for 243 years ago. This is why it’s important to remember these events, from the Revolutionary War to every event that followed.

In addition to observing the start of the Revolutionary War this month, next month is Memorial Day. This holiday is a chance to honor those who have died while serving in the U.S. military. While it originated in the years that followed the Civil War, nearly 100 years after the Revolutionary War, Memorial Day is an opportunity to pay respect to those who first fought for the rights we have today. Those people, from the Founding Fathers to the soldiers, laid down the foundation for our country, and it’s important to commemorate their efforts, loss, and determination.

They were fighting for something they believed in so strongly, a common cause to rally around as a

country. From that Revolution came the Constitution and Bill of Rights, creating a country that has endured to this day. It’s awe- inspiring. Today, our soldiers continue to uphold what those individuals fought and died for: our rights to be an independent country with freedoms. Many people acknowledge the effort and courage it takes for someone to join a military branch, but often, it is discounted. Though times are much different than they were

NATIONAL LAUNDRY DAY Celebrate: Let Us Do It for You

Sprout Your Kids’ Imagination

With spring officially underway, April showers starting to bring May flowers, and Earth Day on April 22, now is a great time for outdoor family activities. ONE FOR THE BIRDS Making a pine cone bird feeder is a fun and inexpensive project. In addition to creating and hanging your bird feeder, you’ll get hours of extra entertainment from watching the birds it will attract to your yard. If your kids are older, take photos of the birds or note their colors and features and look them up in a field guide or online. This craft just requires a pine cone (the bigger the better), peanut butter, and some twine or string. Top the peanut butter with “sprinkles” of mixed birdseed or small pieces of nuts and fruit to appeal to even more birds. For full instructions, visit TheSpruce.com and search “pine cone bird feeder.” AN EGG-CELLENT PLANTER Save those eggshells from breakfast (and the paper carton, too!) and use them to start a garden! Your little ones will enjoy planting some seeds, watering them, and watching them sprout and grow into something new. When the sprouts are big enough and it’s warm enough outside, you can plant the shell and carton directly into the ground! This easy project just requires rinsed eggshell halves, some lightly moistened potting soil, and seeds of your choosing. Note that smaller seeds, like those for herbs, lettuces, peppers, or tomatoes, work best for this project. For full instructions, visit GardenBetty.com and search “starting seeds in eggshells.” STICK WITH MAGIC Nature is a magical place. Many kids know this instinctively and often point out things adults take for granted or overlook, like bright-colored leaves, fun-shaped rocks, and acorn “hats.” Making a nature wand is a great way to let your kids explore their environment, whether that’s in your backyard, on a neighborhood walk, or in your favorite park. Let their imaginations run wild with what their magic wand can do! This simple project starts with a stick and masking tape. Your kids add all the extra flair by hunting for natural treasures and sticking them onto their wand. Complete instructions can be found at LaughingKidsLearn.com/nature-wands-outdoor-play .

National Laundry Day, celebrated on April 15, gives us the opportunity to highlight our laundry services here at Janet Davis Cleaners once again! As one of our fastest growing services, we are happy to continue helping people find relief as we take care of their laundry troubles. However, that’s not all. This holiday is a great time to inform family or friends that you know a solution for their laundry struggles. When piles of laundry start to appear in the corners of the room or on top of laundry baskets, it can be stressful just to look at. Sorting, loading, unloading, drying, and folding those clothes is often too much work for one person or a family to handle on their own. In fact, the average family spends more than six hours a week doing laundry. With our Wash-Dry-Fold laundry service, your loved ones can free up their time and reduce their stress. No matter what dirty laundry you may have — socks, sheets, towels, T-shirts, undergarments, washcloths, pillowcases, gym shorts, or sweats — we can clean, dry, and fold it for you. What’s more, you can either bring your items directly to one of our locations nearest you, or we can pick up your items and deliver them back to you. Once your clothes are with us, we make sure the clothing pockets are empty, then sorted and cleaned individually; your clothes will not be mixed with any other person's clothes. Our professional machines thoroughly wash your clothes and automatically inject softener to guarantee softness. We then dry using moisture- sensing dryers that help keep static down by not overdrying. Your clothes are then removed and folded immediately. Rest assured that all folding surfaces are thoroughly disinfected with clothing- safe Lysol spray before each use. After your clothing has been folded, it is wrapped in plastic and placed into your bag to be delivered back to you discreetly and safely. If you know someone who would benefit from our Wash-Dry-Fold laundry service, give them our number: 248-543-0340. Our team is ready to help!

CLEANING AND STORING What to Keep in Mind for Your Coats

DRYING

With the warming weather, people are preparing to store their heavy winter coats and jackets and bring out their more colorful and lighter spring and summer attire. To help our readers, we’re including a few tips and tricks on how you can safely clean and store your coats at home.

If you’re washing and drying your coats at home, remember that it’s much better to run your coats through the dryer on low. And, of course, this should only be done to coats that can be safely dried in a dryer. Down coats, for instance, must be put into the dryer, but they should be on the lowest heat setting. Even if this means drying will take longer, it is more important that they warm properly so the zippers don’t melt and stick — permanently. If any of your coats have tags that say “Dry Clean Only,” bring them to Janet Davis Cleaners. Our team will clean your items, remove all debris, and prepare them properly for the next few months in storage.

STORING

The best way to store your clothes is clean. Insects, such as dust mites or moths, like to snack on any debris left on clothing, including food, dead skin cells, sweat, and oil — along with the fabric. Additionally, stains can be harder to remove once they’ve settled into clothing fibers. Dirt will often work into items such as snowboarding and skiing gear the longer it sits, so be sure to properly clean and thoroughly dry your coats before storing them away. Instead of scrambling next fall, get them cleaned and put away properly now.

CHECKING TAGS

To increase the longevity of your coats, check all clothing item tags carefully before you clean them. Care tags usually have specific instructions on what does and does not work in regard to the cleaning process, including what type of wash cycle and water temperature to use. It may even include which detergents to use and which to avoid.
