the wrap-up
The year 20/21 has been an exceptionally busy time for advocacy and media coverage for Housing Choices, with more than 340 stories related to Housing Choices appearing in mainstream media, including TV. The launch of our social media strategy and establishment of a new digital team has paid dividends with Housing Choices leading the sector in quality content, advocating for ourselves and community housing more broadly. Since October 2021 followers have increased across all platforms; most notably on Linkedin by 1680 followers, which took our total from 3284 to 4964 and growing. Communicating through our own channels including the website or via stakeholder relationships, events and sector forums, is becoming an increasingly effective means of reaching decision makers and key audiences, over traditional media. That being said, Housing Choices was incredibly well-represented across all genres of media over the past year. Highlights included two stories in the Australian Financial Review; the announcement of our partnership with Assemble in a Build to Rent community in Perth, and a story on community housing organisations accessing NHFIC bonds. Advocating for the implementation of a social housing levy to future property developments, saw Managing Director Michael Lennon and Jude Munro, Chair of the Victorian Planning Authority, co-author an Opinion piece for The Age ‘Affordable Housing Will Benefit Everyone’. The Herald-Sun ran a story about innovative use of urban space to enable more social housing in cities with Housing Choices Tasmania backing a Hobart councillor’s push to have under-utilised carparks and airspace rezoned for social housing.
Meanwhile in SA, our work in innovative in social housing with Nightingale at Bowden and Spence on Light, were named as social housing exemplars in ‘Showcasing the Best of Social Housing’ featured inline at InDaily SA while The Advertiser ran a positive story on HCSA’s new housing pathways project for at risk youth. The quality and design of our projects, in particular Gertrude St, St Albans and Hemmings St, Dandenong – both in Victoria, received industry accolades and an award, from the Australian Institute of Architects. This resulted in extensive coverage in sector press such as Architecture Australia and AIA magazine. Rolling announcements of our Big Housing Build developments in conjunction with the Victorian Government and Homes Victoria received exposure on the Government’s social platforms as well as our own, while expected backlash to the new planning laws expediting permits resulted in only one story online at ABC News, which featured General Manager Property Development, James Henry.
