Y12 Bulletin 18.10.24

A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 12

I would like to thank our Year 12 students for supporting this week’s OFSTED inspection. They were observed in lessons and spoke to inspectors about their experiences of our school. I am grateful for their contributions and we look forward to seeing the full report after the half-term break. Year 12 have had a number of extracurricular activities this week, including a lecture on the topic of Ethics and Abortion with Philosophy professor Clare Carlisle of King’s College London, while Music Students from across the Sixth Form went to see “La Boheme” at the English National Opera. Student feedback for both events was very positive. On Wednesday, as part of their A Level in Art, Year 12 students participated in an illustration workshop with Arts University Plymouth. Today the whole school took part in Wear Red Day in support of the charity Show Racism the Red Card. A huge thank you to all who took part and made donations. Next week, Year 12 Literature students will be going to see a play called “A Raisin in the Sun” on Monday at the Lyric theatre in Hammersmith, while on Wednesday, students who have signed up to the Waldegrave MBA will be taken off timetable in order to partake in this incredible opportunity. As a reminder, participating in the MBA will allow students to develop some work-related skills and have a go at setting up and running their own business and keeping any profits that they make. It will be a useful experience and a great addition to both university and job applications. This coming Thursday we will be hosting our Sixth Form open evening. A large number of Year 12 students will be involved and I would like to thank them all in advance for their help. Finally, on Friday, the last day of this half-term, Year 12 Media Studies students will attend the EGX and MCM Comic Conference. I am sure attendance to this event will further enhance their passion for the subject and offer them some ideas in terms of what they could do in the future. Students are encouraged to get involved in extracurricular activities, as such we wanted to highlight an incredible opportunity for students to get involved with the London Youth Games as a Team Member. Applications are open for passionate 14-24 year olds to represent their borough - see page 4 for more information.

BOOK OF THE MONTH

‘The old man and the sea’- Ernest Hemingway

A beautiful tale of a fisherman’s extremely challenging journey through the gulf stream, with a burning desire to catch what he has never been able to previously. The emotive effects of isolation and the physical toll chasing your dreams can take become more and more prevalent throughout. Hemingway masterfully combines carefully crafted and peaceful imagery of the sea with immense mental torment, as well as taking readers on a journey regarding the emptiness we may feel once our goals have been achieved, and perhaps don’t bring the fulfilment we dreamt of, we always wish for more. ~ Zara
