In Memoriam Artillery School For a time during the Civil War, Fort Richardson served as an “Artillery School”, teaching gunners to use triangulation to sight the range of their artillery. For much of the war Fort Richardson was staffed by the 1st Connecticut Artillery, whose Company G, recruited from Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, included many who possessed a knowledge of mathematics. Their skills were used not only to sight the ranges for potential targets but also to instruct others in triangulation. For more on the “Artillery School,” click here.

WNHGO: Women’s Nine Hole Golf Organization

Our Beat the Pro Tournament was held on 3 October in Fairfax. It was a gorgeous fall day, and nine WNHGO members beat our PGA Director of Golf, Brad Myers in this fun, annual tournament. Congratulations to Marcia Carlucci (1st place), Cheryl Gallagher (2nd), and Shannon Bibb (3rd). It certainly helped that Brad only used his 7-iron, sand wedge, and putter! Fall Fest was held on 24 October in Fairfax. Congratulations to the 1st place team of Rita Kuntz, Mary Helmantoler, and Maureen Carita. The Fall Luncheon will take place on Tuesday, 7 November at 11:30 am at Arlington. Contact JoEllen Fowler at GeorgiaPeachjo@gmail.com with any questions. The WNHGO Winter Golf season begins 1 November and ends 31 March. Winter golf allows you to play anytime and with whomever you choose to play with. Winter Golf sign-up sheets are posted in the Fairfax and Arlington Ladies Locker Rooms, and players will post their scores on these sheets. A total of 10 rounds of golf must be played only at ANCC courses, with at least one playing partner (who does not have to be a WNHGO member). The cost is $10. If you have any questions, please contact Winter Golf Chairman Mary Fields at fields.mary@verizon.net.

CWGO

The Career Women’s Golf Organization’s season is winding up, with weekday and weekend play ending at the end of October. We are happy to report that we have some winter/off-season events planned and will be reaching out to our members for further information. Importantly, the CWGO held its Working Women’s Offsite – Fall Outing (the “WWOFO”) at the beginning of October in beautiful Queenstown Harbor, Maryland. After two days of fun group and individual play, the new WWOFO “Queen”, Tina Gwilliam, was pronounced, taking over the reins from Kathleen Love. Our new Queen is responsible for organizing WWOFO 2024 and for encouraging general merriment amongst our ranks for the next year. Long live the Queen! We are also so pleased to report that our CWGO In- terclub team won its division and is scheduled to play for the Interclub championship against other division winners. Please stay turned for results. We thank our CWGO Interclub co-captains, Gwen House and Amy DeWitt for their leadership, and congratulate all of the CWGO Interclub members on their victory!

WGO-18: Women’s 18 Hole Golf Organization

We’re wishing everyone a happy fall! As our season wraps to a close, members enjoyed a fun Halloween tournament scramble followed by the President’s Plate Tournament where President Cindy Loughran thanked all the volunteers who helped make this year fabulous. The WGO-18 had a wonderful season offering a mixture of fun days and serious days with 13 official tournaments (some of them multi-day, themed tournaments), clinics, and weekly play days at both Arlington and Fairfax. Informal play will continue throughout the winter, with the season commencing again next March/April. If you’re interested in meeting an enjoyable and diverse group of golfers and keeping your golf going throughout the winter or getting ready for next spring, please contact Membership Chair Ruth Daly at ruthadaly@verizon.net. A special thank you to all ANCC golf professionals, greenskeepers and staff!

LOOKING AHEAD TO SUMMER 2024

The ANCC Centennial Junior Chorus Camp is a place for middle and high school singers with choral experience to come together and make music for a couple of hours each afternoon. Over the course of this two-week camp, students will get individual feedback from a private voice teacher, group instruction in choral singing, and be prepared to perform a diverse program of choral music on the last day of camp. Children wishing to participate will be asked to submit a short video clip of themselves singing so that camp leaders can choose repertoire that will highlight their strengths.

Dear Members,

We would like your feedback. We are considering holding a two-week Summer Chorus Camp in 2024. As this involves significant planning and resources we’d like to know if this is something your children would participate in before we commit. Possible time frame, mid to last week in July from 3:30-5:30 PM. Please take a minute to read the description below and provide your feedback by clicking here.
