In Memoriam Artillery School For a time during the Civil War, Fort Richardson served as an “Artillery School”, teaching gunners to use triangulation to sight the range of their artillery. For much of the war Fort Richardson was staffed by the 1st Connecticut Artillery, whose Company G, recruited from Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, included many who possessed a knowledge of mathematics. Their skills were used not only to sight the ranges for potential targets but also to instruct others in triangulation. For more on the “Artillery School,” click here.
