Additionally, I am thrilled to announce the completion of the new women’s sauna. This addition will undoubtedly provide a relaxing and rejuvenating experience for our female members, further enriching our oerings at the Outrigger Canoe Club. These projects would not be possible without the dedicated Board and member volunteers who have guided the sta and coordinated third party consultants in these e orts. Looking ahead to 2024, we have an important project on the horizon. We will be addressing the concrete spalling and conducting necessary maintenance work in our parking structure. This project is essential to ensure the safety and longevity of our facilities, and we appreciate your understanding and support as we undertake this endeavor.

General Manager’s Corner

ALOHA OUTRIGGER ‘OHANA, As we approach the last couple months of the year, I wanted to take this opportuni- ty to wish you and your family a joyous holiday season!

Like many of you, this is undoubt- edly my favorite time of the year. The sparkling holiday decora- tions, the familiar Christmas music, the sweet aroma of sugar cookies, and the sight of Santa on the red canoe always puts a smile on my face. As you’re reading this, our Club is bustling with prepa-

standing by to help create memorable experiences for your families and friends! This edition of Ama includes a feature on giving back, so I’d like to give you a glimpse of what our team is doing this holiday season to give back to the community. On Oct. 8, more than 25 members of the sta and their families participated in the 2023 Komen Hawai‘i More Than Pink Walk at Kapi‘olani Park. On Oct. 28, approximately 20 sta members joined in on a beach cleanup in partnership with the Surfrider Foundation. In November, members of the team will actively support the Habitat for Humanity Association. Throughout the year, our team constantly looks for way to support the community. I would like to take a moment to thank each and every one of our employees who volunteers and supports these meaningful eorts. Last, but certainly not least, I want to thank the membership for their contributions to the Holiday Fund for the employees. Your giving nature during the holidays is so heartwarming. On behalf of the entire team, I want to extend our heartfelt thank you for your kindness in helping create a wonderful holiday season for us all!

rations for the holiday season. The operations team has been diligently making our lists and checking them twice to make sure every detail is carefully planned to ensure you enjoy your holidays at the Club! During this festive season, I would like to highlight an area that brings all of us joy at the Club –the Food and Beverage Program. While members appreciate the exceptional food and outstanding service provided by our Club, what may not be widely known is that part of this experience is subsidized by your membership dues. This subsidy allows us to oer unparalleled culinary experiences without the substantial prices. It is our way of expressing our gratitude for your ongoing commitment to the Club. Beyond dining experiences in the Koa Lanai, the Hau Terrace, the Ka Mo‘i and the Snack Shop, we oer exclusive event spaces for your holiday gatherings, birthday celebrations, business dinners, or intimate evenings with close friends. The beautiful ambiance and private settings reflect the high standard of food and service you’ve come to expect from the Club. This aligns with our philosophy of providing unforgettable events at unbeatable prices. Interested in planning an event? Please contact our talented catering department headed up by Wayne Larrow, Assistant Food and Beverage Director, who’s in charge of catering; Jhasmine Sacro, the Events Manager; or Leiolani Malagon Leon, the Events Coordinator. GIVING BACK ❤

IN THE SPIRIT OF TRADITION The history of volunteerism and giving back runs deep at the Outrigger Canoe Club.

Paddling coach Liz Perry, one of—if not the only—female escort boat drivers at OCC.

❤ GIVING BACK

THE CLUB IS A PLACE WHERE GOOD FELLOWSHIP AND ALOHA PREVAIL, not only for its members but our community at large. For years, we’ve had a Toys for Tots donation box during the holiday season, hosted beach clean ups and have held fundraising events for various organizations. And one of the Club’s long-standing traditions is having member-led committees and volunteers to help run OCC. One woman in particular who has continued the tradition of sharing her knowledge and skills with the next generation through volunteer coaching is Liz Perry. A Winged “O” and member since 1968, Liz has contributed to the Club’s athletic programs— specifically canoe racing—in myriad ways. “Liz has been an integral part o OCC paddling. She has introduced, motivated and shaped hundreds of men and women to the program throughout the years. Her dedication and selflessness has made paddlers better people and the Outrigger a better place,” says Tom McTigue, who’s coached alongside her for many years. As unlikely as it seems, her paddling and coach- ing career actually began at the same time, thanks to a little push from Life Member Michele St. John. When Liz was 19, she began competing on the Nov- ice B team, all the while sharing what she was learn- ing with the boys and girls 12-year-old crews. All three won that year. She was hooked, and since then, Liz has served on a committee— Historical, House, Entertainment and, of course, Athletics—and/or coached—paddling, volleyball, tennis—nearly every year since. She served on the Board of Directors for

several years, and was Club Captain from 1992 to 1993, and to this day, Liz continues to be one of the most involved members. This year, Liz once again stepped up to coach at a time when the pro-

gram was going through some changes. “I just felt I could right the ship,” she says. “We feel very grate- ful that Liz Perry stepped up to coach again and that she devoted herself to make it another super fun [paddling] season. We all felt so much joy to be on the water together under her great leader- ship,” says Jennifer Raams. She continues, “Liz is a badass coach, mentor, and she’s always super motivating. She is all about the ‘O’ and talks about fellowship on the water. She says in paddling, and in our lives, it’s all about relationships and when enjoying the experience success will come.” The longtime and beloved coach believes that paddling is also about being part of something that is bigger than yourself. “She is particularly good at nurturing novice paddlers and instilling in them a love for the sport, which she herself has cultivated over decades,” shares Raams, who’s been paddling in the OCC program for 23 years. “Liz Perry is the kind of coach who makes you want to come back and get better and better after every practice.” Liz says, “The impact Outrigger paddling has had on my life is immeasurable. I want to leave

behind that same feeling of belonging to some- thing bigger than ourselves. It’s hard to describe the feeling of fellowship you can gain through paddling and being part of a tradition that goes back to 1908. There is something meaningful to me to be part of canoe history and perpetuating this culture. I’ve made most of my dearest friends through paddling. It’s a special experience when you find ‘your people.’” When it comes to her “why,” Liz says, “It’s fun! Paddling and coaching. It’s an honor to share my passion with others and rewarding to watch crews come together and have moments of success. It’s hard to describe that moment when it all comes together, friendship, hard work and skill.” MORE ALOHA ➻ In the spirit of the holidays, we’re highlighng how other members have given back, many for years and even decades. The e—orts that these members—and countless others—put into the Club through their volunteer work on the various commiªees should not, and does not, go unno- ced. Of course, OCC has hundreds of people contribung countless hours to make this a great Club, and we wish we could highlight them all. Below are just some of the fond memories and words of appreciaon members had to say about one another.

“Laurie Foster, our imme- diate past President, is the current Chair of the Long Range Planning Commi¡ee. She reinvented the Club’s strategic planning process a few years ago, has been

instrumental in continuing to evolve our corporate governance practices at the Board level, and has contributed greatly to the Club’s recent eorts with respect to the Elks Club. Her professional, steady, and unflappably leadership is a wonderful style for those around her to want to emulate.” —Emily Porter, Coordinating Director of Long Range Planning Committee

CANOE ALLEY SPORTS RESULTS, EMPLOYEES OF THE MONTH & MORE

So Long, Long Distance Season! What an amazing distance season! Mahalo to the amazing coaches that took the time and energy to impart the wisdom, passion and paddling power to all the crews! The lifelong bonds cultivated among the crews while battling the ocean and sun are strong, both in and out of the canoe. Looking forward to next year!” —Taizo Braden

“A culmination of 6 months training, 10 races, and highs and lows of all sorts brought us here to 2023 Henry [Ayau Memorial Race]. This season, though not perfect (they never are), has solidified the notion that everything happens for a reason. I took a leap, leaving the comfort of the last epic five years with Team Oceania, and planted some roots in the start of this team full of potential and youth. As with every team I’ve been lucky enough to be a part of, the friendships and brotherhood are what stand out most. Mahalo boys for an epic season of growth and opportunity. I’m grateful to be able to share the wa‘a with you folks and I’m ecstatic to see where we go next. We ain’t done yet! Special mahalo nui to Tom [McTigue], Jim [Beaton] and Ryland [Hart] for spearheading this program and giving us direction and purpose. Your folks’ vision is unquestionable and I’m stoked you were able to see it through.” —George Wilson, on long distance paddling with OCC’s Open Men’s team
