MENTORS AND SUCCESS I believe that finding a mentor and defining success go hand-in-hand. I don’t think you find only one mentor, either. I have a mentor I look up to in a business sense —Dr. Greg Rose — and both my father and my father-in- law are personal or life mentors. On the business side of things, a mentor can be extremely helpful. You have someone who’s been through it all, can answer questions, and can provide support when you need help or guidance. They’ll have different views on how they approach a problem, and that can help you succeed in your business, just as it helped them succeed in theirs. My practice is more of a private or single practice— I’m not working with a group of chiropractors, and I’m not working in a hospital setting. When you’re on your own like I am, having a mentor to lead you through the more difficult times is especially helpful. Finding a mentor depends a lot on finding a person with whom you can connect. Having the same beliefs and goals can help you relate to one another. Find somebody you admire because of how they handle the obstacles they face or how they run their business. “On the business side of things, a mentor can be extremely helpful. You have someone who’s been through it all, can answer questions, and can provide support when you need help or guidance.”
I used to do a lot of work with golfers, which is how I met Dr. Rose. We happened to go to the same Titleist seminar and made a connection. I was working in the Naval hospital at the time, which is where his practice was located in Maryland. Since then, we’ve always stayed in touch as we progressed through our professions. I pick his brain regularly — and he continues to provide sound advice regarding our practice, business, and challenges we meet along the way. My father and father-in-law both encourage me to do the best I can in a professional sense and a personal sense. I watched my father work hard every day when I was young. He was a firefighter and had a solid work ethic. He would go above and beyond what was needed or asked of him, took care of his family, and was always there for us when we needed him. Watching him work so diligently instilled in me the same work ethic from a young age. It shaped how I became so successful. I have a similar bond with my father-in-law, but there are also differences. He’s a very caring person. Someone in the family once described him as the “mother” of the family. He’s the kind of person who’s always there to support you and have your back. Like my father, he goes above and beyond in everything he does for people, both inside and outside the family. He genuinely cares about everyone. There have been many times when I’ve been exhausted and thought, “I can’t do this,” but I’ve always pulled through. I always try to be the best that I can in what I do. I see how far my mentors have come and look up to their achievements, and then I know I can push myself harder to achieve my goals. -Dr. Todd P. Sullivan
Dr. Greg Rose is a chiropractor who started his practice locally and now runs what they call the Titleist Performance Institute in California. He started out as a chiropractor working with golfers and set up his practice here in the D.C. area. He was so successful that a big golf company asked him to build a million-dollar facility in California, and he did.

DID YOUR WORKOUT ROUTINE TAKE A SUMMER VACATION? Jump Back in With These Strategies With barbecues, trips to the pool, and indulging in refreshing beverages on the patio, summer is full of relaxation and fun. But those heart-pumping, muscle-building trips to the gymmay have become less frequent during the warmer months. If your workout routine went on its own summer vacation, here are three strategies to get back to it. 1. FIND SOMETHING YOU LIKE TODO. Maybe part of the reason your fitness routine took a break was because you didn’t enjoy doing it. If that’s the case, re-evaluate your options. There is no superior form of exercise, and there are plenty of options to align with your preferences. If you couldn’t get enough of hiking in national parks over the summer, join a hiking group in your community. If you prefer being on a team, look for a local adult league for your favorite sport. 2. SET YOURSELF UP FOR SUCCESS. You would go to that 5:30 p.m. boot camp class, but it’s right in the middle of your daughter’s dance practice. Getting to the gym is half the battle, so make it easier on yourself by preparing in advance. Find a facility with a schedule that easily fits yours. If you’re planning to work out in the morning, set your clothes out the night before, and choose an energetic song for your alarm. If there’s a class after work, consider leaving an extra set of gym clothes at your office so you’ll never have an excuse not to go. 3.MAKEYOURWORKOUTANUNAVOIDABLE PARTOFYOURDAY. It’s tempting to join your coworkers for happy hour, especially when that outdoor patio is just around the block from your office. But what if it were that easy to get to the gym? Look for facilities that are on your commute, near your work, or close to home. If it’s easy to get to, you’ll be more likely to go and still have time for that drink afterward. It may take time to make your workout routine a seamless part of your life, but implementing some of these strategies will make it easier and more enjoyable. You might even find yourself looking forward to back-to-the-gym season!
STABBING PAIN IN YOUR FEET?
We Can Help!
One of the most common conditions we treat at NOVA Chiropractic & Acupuncture is plantar fasciitis. This condition is when the connective muscle on the bottom of your foot becomes inflamed or swollen, making it painful to run or walk. With every step, patients experience a stabbing pain in the arch and heel of their foot. Plantar fasciitis is most commonly found in runners and athletes, but it can afflict anyone. If you were to go for a long walk or spend a day hiking with friends, you might experience these sharp pains in your feet the following day. It’s also quite common in people who are overweight, have flat or high arches, are over the age of 40, wear shoes with little support, or stand for long hours. The muscle or tissue on the bottom of your foot that connects your toes to your heel is called fascia. The fascia’s function is to cushion your foot while you’re walking, but if it’s overworked, small tears can appear on its surface. These tears are what cause the sharp pains in your feet. Depending on how acute or painful it is, our office offers many different treatments. For acute and chronic plantar fasciitis, we use laser therapy to reduce the pain, swelling, and inflammation. Other treatments include Active Release Techniques and the Graston Technique. Another treatment we offer is dry needling to the calf muscles, which can help reduce the strain on the plantar fascia. If you’re suffering from acute pain, you can expect pain relief in 4–8 treatments, while chronic cases can last for 1–3 months of treatment, depending on how long you’ve had the pain. Acute plantar fasciitis will improve with time by resting your feet and allowing your body to heal itself. However, if the pain refuses to dissipate, it’s time to seek professional help. Patients who ignore the problem or simply live with it can face long-term complications. Simple activities, such as taking the first step out of bed, can become excruciatingly painful. If you’re suffering from sharp, stabbing pains in your feet, you shouldn’t have to live with it. Call our office today at (703) 912-7822. Don’t live your life around the pain!

NEED A PERSONAL ASSISTANT TO MANAGE YOUR KIDS’ CRAZY SCHEDULES?
Try These 3 Tips Instead
TEAMWORKMAKES THE DREAMWORK While you’re busy trying to rally the troops at soccer practice, the scene at home resembles a horror movie. Laundry is piling up, food is spoiling in the fridge, and the dust bunnies around the house now have names. Housecleaning is a part-time job in its own right. The only way to stay on top of duties around the house is to work together. A chore chart with clear responsibilities is a great place to start. Whether you have one child or eight, everyone is capable of pitching in.
School has started. Youth sports are in full swing. Work is crazy. Food has become more about necessity than enjoyment. All of this can only mean one thing: Fall has begun. The crazy schedules this time of year can make it tough for parents to keep their heads on straight; making it through the insanity sometimes feels more like survival than life. But there are tactics you can employ to turn the tide and find more time for yourself. TAG TEAM There’s no reason to try to do everything on your own. The phrase “It takes a village to raise a child” exists because managing the stressors of life requires help. A great place to start is by establishing car pools with a parent group you trust. You can alternate drivers weekly, which provides the opportunity for you to focus your attention on other priorities — or if you’re lucky, have some freedom. THE RIGHT TOOL FOR THE JOB Technology makes organization easier and more accessible than ever. By using a tool like a shared calendar, you can coordinate the entire family’s schedule so you never miss a beat. And apps like Mealime and MealBoard give you the ability to whip up food that is cost-effective and delicious.
You can have all the organizational abilities in the world, but the best way to manage life’s madness isn’t by directing day-to- day tasks; it’s by managing stress. Instead of using these tools to control life, look at them as a way to free up time so you can decompress and enjoy the things you love.
