Preston College Apprenticeship Course Guide 2026-27

CONSTRUCTION AND THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT

your own workload, and carry out higher-level tasks in your chosen trade with precision and efficiency. Training covers problem-solving on site, supervising or guiding others, ensuring work meets quality standards, and applying detailed health and safety practices. You’ll also develop strong communication, planning and organisational skills - preparing you to take on greater responsibility, work more independently and progress into senior trade roles within the construction industry. Previous experience is not essential for many of our Level 2 and Level 3 construction apprenticeships, but each apprenticeship will have its own specified entry requirements. These are detailed on our website. Advertised vacancies will also state their required criteria, with many employers taking into consideration any previous work experience and your enthusiasm for the role. HIGHER-LEVEL CONSTRUCTION Our higher-level construction apprenticeships (level 4 and above) will give you a clear career progression route as you master advanced techniques in various fields such as project management, building technology, and site supervision, giving you the expertise needed to lead complex construction projects with confidence. You’ll take on a more strategic, supervisory role, learning how to manage construction projects, supervise site teams, and report on quality and cost control. You will deepen your understanding of construction management, site safety, sustainability and building technology, as well as learn how to plan, organise and monitor work to meet regulatory standards. Our higher-level programmes will build your leadership, decision-making and communication skills, preparing you to step into roles such as Assistant Site Manager, Construction Technician or Site Supervisor and to work confidently both on-site and in office-based management.

“Our apprentices are brilliant for the company - they’re enthusiastic, helpful, and eager to learn. They bring exactly what we need for the business and its future development. I went through the apprenticeship route myself at Preston College and I loved it. It’s got me to where I am today, and it shows how much you can progress with an apprenticeship.” IAN Joinery Manager at Eric Wright Construction Ltd
