We understand the challenges adult learners face as they balance education with everyday life, and we are committed to providing solutions that make learning accessible, relevant and achievable for everyone. That is why we’ve tailored our courses to address three key challenges faced by adult learners: time constraints, financial limitations and the need for flexibility. transforming lives through education and empowering individuals to change Firstly, we are fully aware of the time constraints that adult learners can face. That’s why we’ve responded by offering reduced fees for specific courses, and making quality education more affordable and accessible to all. Offering further financial support, including help with childcare and travel costs, can also help you to navigate barriers to returning to education.

PERPARIME ESOL

Perparime’s ESOL journey is a testament to her determination and resilience, and the transformative power of education. Arriving in Preston from Albania with her family, Perparime was uncertain about her future, in a new country with few familiar faces. Despite initial fears and self-doubt, she decided to enrol on an ESOL course, marking a crucial step towards overcoming language barriers. Beyond learning the basics of English, she praises the holistic approach of the course, which has also helped her to confidently express her thoughts and opinions. “Studying was such an enjoyable experience and I am now able to move forward in life, with so many new opportunities available to me, which I am so grateful for!”

JENNIFER HAIRDRESSING LEVEL 3 DIPLOMA Having successfully completed the Hairdressing Level 2 Diploma, Jennifer progressed onto the Level 3 Diploma course to showcase her skills and to continue to develop her ever growing skill set. The creative nature of the course and topics covered, such as colouring techniques have taken Jennifer’s hairdressing skills to the next level, which has given her confidence in going on to secure full-time employment in the future, before ultimately going on to open her own hairdressing salon. “I love how creative this course is. I’m always learning new skills, and I am so happy I came to Preston College, where I continue to learn so much and can further my skills.”

COUNSELLING

KEVIN With over 25 years’ experience in education, Kevin saw an increasing focus placed on wellbeing, which ignited a keen interest in mental health issues, and the start of a new career in counselling. With over 2 years voluntary counselling, followed by a further 4 years in private practice, Kevin then embarked on a career as a HE lecturer here at Preston College. Kevin has trained in person centred and integrative counselling through to Masters level, and is currently studying a Professional Doctorate, researching mindfulness in psychotherapy which he is due to complete this year.

IAN Teaching and studying at Preston College has been part of Ian’s life since starting his counselling studies here in 2011. As a counselling lecturer, Ian recognises the teaching team must remain in practice and keep up to date with their own development and he is currently studying for a Masters Degree in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy. “The teaching approach within the counselling department at Preston College is a rich blend of theoretical study, hands on skills practice and underpinned with personal development.”

STEVE Steve embarked on his counselling career late in life, having started his career in education as a drama teacher, street theatre performer and community artist, before retraining as a Further Education tutor. “My teaching style has a root in relating to people, fostering change and stimulating creativity. I love teaching because I meet people of all ages and backgrounds wanting to discover the world of counselling.”

COUNSELLING

Counsellors play a crucial role in improving the health and wellbeing of our society. Working in confidential settings, counsellors work with a variety of people across a range of often challenging and complex issues. Ensuring practitioners have the self-reflection and resilience to support people as they work through these issues is a common thread throughout all of the counselling courses at Preston College. Counselling services can be delivered in a variety of settings including schools, universities, colleges, GP surgeries, hospitals, in the workplace, addiction agencies, disability support groups and private practice. Sometimes counsellors will have dual roles, meaning counselling can often be a second career for many. For those looking to change career, you will begin your studies at Level 2 with opportunities upon successful completion, to progress onto Level 3, Level 4 or degree level programmes. Those already employed in the sector, looking to take their education to a higher level, will find Foundation degrees and BSc (Hons) Top-up degree, offering the ideal opportunity to achieve qualifications which reflect experience, skills level and existing sector-based knowledge.
