what of that? The prize of our high calling is a sufficient consolation for us. —Charles Haddon Spurgeon. 16. Our Burdens “Cast thy burden upon the Lord, . . < he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved” (Psa. 55:22). It does not say to cast it anywhere. Nowhere in the Bible are we advised to toss our burdens away recklessly. I think it very cowardly, this trying to get rid of burdens. Our burdens, like the wings of the bird, were meant to make us mount. . . . God Intends them for our good. I believe the root weakness of the church today is that we have so much to enjoy and so little to endure. —M. J. McLeod. 17. Delightful Desire “Whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst” (John 4:14). That does not mean that in the Chris tian life desire is ended. . . . There is desire, but.no despairing. There is long ing, but no languishing. There is fervor, but no fever. There is aspiration and contentment. There is striving and rest. We still thirst for the fullness of grace not yet received, but there is no pain in the thirst. In the Christian life, the very thirst for greater fullness is itself a de light.—J. H. Jowett. 18. Faith and Accomplishment “If ye have faith as a grain of mus tard seed, ye shall say unto this moun tain, Remove hence to yonder place; and It shall remove: and nothing, shall be impossible unto you” (Matt. 17:20). Faith, to our Lord, was and is a tre mendous force. . . . Believe the impos sible and it becomes the possible. . . . In the past, the faith that we hold made men work impossibilities and supplied them with the power to change the whole earth, but we lack the urgent, in sistent, appealing note that will brook no denial. Let us then seek to make of the life of faith the big, noble, great hearted adventure that our Lord made of it.—J. Y. Simpson. 19. The, Man Who Lives with God “He that dwelleth in the secret place . . . shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty” (Psa. 91:1). When a man lives With God, . . . he will weave no longer a spotted life of shreds and patches, but he will live with1 a divine unity. . . . He will calmly front the morrow in the negligency of that trust which carries God With it, and so has the whole future in the bottom of his heart. It is quite clear that this is a far higher type of sanity than is con sidered necessary in worldly affairs. —A. T. Schofield. 20. The Word of God “But he answered and said, It is writ ten” (Matt. 4:4).

Though hearts grow faint and spirits sink, By every wind of feeling blown; Though faith itself may seem to fall, I,rest upon Thy Word alone. Against the foeman’s fiery darts I wield anew the Spirit’s sword, And answer every fresh assault With ever fresh, "Thus saith the Lord.” ’Mid shifting sands of doubt and fear This is the one foundation stone; My soul has cast her anchor here; I rest upon Thy Word alone. - —Annie Johnson Flint. 21. The Enemy’s Tactics “For they all make us afraid, saying, Their hands shall be weakened from the work, that It be not done, Now- therefore, O God, strengthen my hands” (Neh. 6:9). Satan’s greatest victories are not won by big attacks, in what we call the crises of life, but by little things which un nerve and harass and irritate us. . '. . Snares for our feet, attractions for our eyes, influences for our minds, decep tions for our spirits, forces approaching from all quarters—these are some of the ways of working -by which he seeks to bring us down from our ascension positibn, but he cannot unless we will. —Gordon Watt. 22. Theory and Practice “Be. ye doers of the word, and not hearers only” (Jas. 1:22). Naturally I would prefer to learn about patience from a book, but our Father sometimes chooses the direct method, and calls us to illustrate it, and this means difficult circumstances, else there would not be the best opportunity. The theory of praise, too, is easily learned, but what shall we say about the practice of it? .;. . We little know how little we know till called to live out what we think we have learned. •—Selected. 23. ^ For Believers Only . “The righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe” (Rom. 3:22). But it is only the “all . . , that be lieve” who are justified; and if it he demanded, why, beneath the supremacy of boundless love and almighty power, the few, and not the many, should be saved, we can but fall back upon divine sovereignty, and exclaim, “O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past find ing out!”—Robert Anderson. 24. ' Taking Heed “Take heed unto thyself” (1 Tim. 4 :1 « ),'
