JANUARY 2024
A NOTE FROM SYLVIA Welcome to 2024! As we bundle up for January and lean into winter sports as only Minnesotans do (or fly south for a bit of warm sunshine), public television programming is available to you on-air and online for your downtime. A new year brings new ideas, new resolutions and new journeys — along with some great new programming on TPT. For the drama aficionado and the lifelong learner, January beckons with a slew of programming gems. On January 2, we kick off an exciting month with the premiere of a new season of Finding Your Roots with the incomparable Henry Louis Gates, Jr., who takes celebrity guests on a journey to better understand the surprising twists of their heritage. Later that week, we get to experience a trifecta of Sunday-night British dramas, including the return of both Miss Scarlet and the Duke and All Creatures Great and Small , as well as a new show called Funny Woman , which chronicles the story of a young woman from Blackpool who takes the male-dominated 1960s comedy scene by storm. After honoring the lasting contributions of Martin Luther King, Jr. on January 15, I am most excited for the premiere of a new film in our award-winning Minnesota Experience history series. Jesse Ventura Shocks the World! lands on our screens on January 16, marking the 25th anniversary of the wrestler-turned-politician's inauguration as Minnesota’s governor. Larger than life, the film explores his early roots, his time as a Navy Seal, his career as pro wrestler “Jesse the Body,” and the values that shaped his political administration. At TPT, we wish you a fulfilling New Year, and we hope that this thrilling line-up of shows brings you joy and ignites your curiosity. We are endlessly grateful for your support.

Rose McGee Believes in the Unifying Power of Sweet Potato Pie By Amy Melin
"So the sweet potato pie has been one of those healing factors for me. I just know that there's power in it. I know that it means so much when people are able to have a slice of it, and it takes them into memories of happier places." The people of Ferguson agreed. McGee's offers of her sweet potato pie were met with surprise, appreciation and gratefulness. Since then, McGee has shared countless pies with members of the Twin Cities community. She's also traveled all over the country, bringing her pies to people and communities in the wake of tragedy. For example, her sweet potato pies comforted members of the Mother Emanuel AME Church in South Carolina and the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh after mass shootings. Since that first trip to Missouri in 2014, McGee's pies have been going out by the dozens thanks to an annual event. Inspired by the reaction she received from people in Ferguson McGee challenged leaders in her hometown of Golden Valley, Minn., to do more. The result? An annual event over the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday weekend aimed at community building. Each year, volunteers gather to make the number of pies equal to the age Dr. King would have been that year. That first year, the group made 86 pies. In 2024, that number reaches 95. But the work doesn't stop there. A community gathering follows, with attendees breaking into small groups to talk about race and equity, and how those issues surface in their communities. "We hope [attendees] take away a better understanding of how to be empathetic and how to listen to each other respectfully and how to really understand that everybody's story is important, is valuable," she adds. Are you inspired to whip up a pie of your own, perhaps to pay tribute to Martin Luther King, Jr.? Check out Rose's recipe.
Rose McGee does not love to cook. It's a surprising admission from a woman who's come to be known by many as "The Pie Lady." With more than 4,000 sweet potato pies to her credit, this Minnesotan is building community and inspiring unity with her Sweet Potato Comfort Pies (sweetpotatocomfortpie. org). And that commitment to community recently earned her a 2023 Facing Race Award from the St. Paul & Minneapolis Foundation, a recognition that honors anti-racism advocates for making Minnesota a place where everyone can thrive. McGee's work was first inspired by the 2014 events in Ferguson, Mo., following the shooting death of an African-American man, Michael Brown, by a police officer. Watching the unrest on television, McGee was suddenly inspired to bake pies and bring them to Ferguson. "It wasn't something that I was interested in doing, baking. But somewhere it resonated in my heart that, you know, this is what you should do," she says. With 30 pies loaded in her car, McGee and her son headed to Missouri. "Black culture has always been in a struggle in this country, and it's in a struggle that continues. From day to day, being faced with white supremacy or racism. And with that comes, 'How do you exist? How do you maintain hope? How do you heal?'" McGee explains.

‘Will You Walk With Me Today?’ By Amy McVay Abbott
"Will you walk with me today, Bishop Lord?" said Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to Bishop John Wesley Lord as King stepped out of his motorcade. The spring day was cool. To keep off the chill, both King and Lord wore overcoats. Lord, the Washington D.C. area bishop, stood in front of the Brown Chapel Methodist Church in Selma, Alabama, on March 9, 1965. President of the National Council of Methodist Bishops, Lord was known to King and his colleagues as a vocal advocate for civil rights. Lord had worked with President John F. Kennedy, President Lyndon B. Johnson and others.
Peaceful marchers left the Brown Chapel and other area churches and marched to the Edmund Pettis Bridge. King and Lord walked arm-in-arm down Sylvan Street, with King's brother and other noted civil rights leaders walking five abreast. Behind them, hundreds of people of all colors and faith traditions marched. A Lifelong Activist Lord returned to Washington and spoke on Friday, March 12, to a conclave of national religious leaders at a Lutheran church two blocks from the U.S. Capitol. Cooper still has a document by her father that offered his thoughts about the meeting. Lord paraphrased John Wesley, Methodist Church founder. "All the world is my parish, and I cherish the right to preach and practice our Lord's Gospel at the point of deepest need.”
"President of the National Council of Methodist Bishops, Lord was known to King and his colleagues as a vocal advocate for civil rights."
King approached Lord and asked him to join the march, recalled Jean Lord Cooper, daughter of the Methodist bishop and activist. Cooper is now in her eighties and lives in Indiana, where she treasures the photographs and clippings of her father's life. “I'm so proud that he became a bishop of the Methodist Church in 1946," said Cooper, who was 13 at the time. She recalled her father's welcoming spirit and his ongoing fight for racial justice. Cooper remembered her father saying he could hear "We Shall Overcome" from the sanctuary of Brown Chapel Methodist Church as King arrived.
"I believe there was a deep need for Selma," Lord concluded.
Lord worked on social issues for the rest of his life, including American and global poverty, anti- Vietnam policy, birth control availability, the United Nations expansion, and the China policy.

How to Stay Fit Through a Long Winter By Rashelle Brown
Anyone living north of the Mason-Dixon line knows that winter can be a big obstacle to staying fit. Cold temperatures, short days and icy sidewalks can all conspire to keep you indoors and on the couch. Since daydreaming about summer won’t make it arrive any sooner, here are some tips to help you stay or get fit as we get through the rest of this winter. Track Your Active Minutes Unfortunately, channel surfing doesn’t count as exercise, so you’ve got to get up and move. Wearing an activity tracker is a great way to motivate yourself and hold yourself accountable. And many smartphones have native apps to track your steps and active minutes; there are tons of free or low-cost apps with even more features.
Whatever device you use, try to work your way up to 120 active minutes per day. This doesn’t have to be “official" exercise. House cleaning, doing laundry and cooking healthy meals are good ways to get up and moving, and if the mood strikes, dancing does wonders for body and mind alike. If you normally sit a lot at work, stand up as often as possible. You can even give yourself “active credit” for standing during the day: Count two minutes of standing as one minute of activity. Get Outside When You Can Don’t be afraid to go outside, weather permitting. There’s nothing more beautiful than a winter hike in the woods or on local trails. Here are a few tips to help you enjoy your outdoor adventures: • Walking on snow-covered grass can be safer than sidewalks that may still have some ice on them. In either case, wear a good pair of boots or get a pair of ice cleats that fit over your boots or shoes. • An even safer bet may be to hike on trails. Just be sure you’re walking on trails that are well maintained. For etiquette’s sake, never walk on a cross-country ski trail. • Play like a kid! Go sledding, build a snowman, make snow angels. There’s nothing like a bright winter day to bring out the playful spirit in all of us.

AMERICAN EXPERIENCE Nazi Town USA In February 1939, more than twenty thousand Americans filled Madison Square Garden for an event billed as a "Pro-American Rally." As images of George Washington hung next to swastikas, a series of speakers railed against the "Jewish controlled media" and called for a return to a racially "pure" America. The embrace of "Americanism" raises thorny issues from questions of free speech to declarations of "America First" that we continue to wrestle with to this day.
