A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 12

It has been great to see all the Year 12 students return after the half term. With the days becoming slightly longer and lighter it feels like spring is on the way.

The week before half term Year 12 students were lucky enough to hear from Mr Ubhi who spoke to the students about his previous careers in investment banking. This was a fantastic talk for anyone who is interested in a job in business and specifically investment banking. Mr Ubhi discussed what makes the industry tick, providing tips for applying and even enabling pupils to experience the stock market. Also in that final week, we had our year group assembly presented by Mr Isted where he celebrated LGBTQ+ history month. The assembly explored the impact that historical figures have had on supporting the movement as well as considering why it is important that this event is celebrated. Students in Year 12 are now busy preparing for their exams which are starting on Monday 15 April. They received an assembly this week about dealing with exam stress and how to use effective revision strategies. We recognise that exams can lead to unhelpful levels of stress in some students and we urge them to inform us if this is the case. This half term students will receive careers and post 18 guidance during form times, therefore it is vital that all students are present at the beginning of each day to receive this information. Members of the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion committee, Sabaa , Anvi and Ameiyha, created and shared a form time activity on Chinese New with the rest of the school. It is great to hear that Year 12 students are actively contributing to school life in this way.

BOOK OF THE MONTH

Never let me go by Kazuo Ishiguro

Never let me go is a suspenseful and absorbing science fiction novel and coming of age story which follows three friends through their unusual childhood. As secrets surrounding their time at the boarding school Hailsham and lives ahead begin to unfold the novel explores the idea of what it is to have a soul and the innate need to hold onto things lost. It’s a sorrowful and complex novel which criticises the extents of exploitation and the moral implications while debating with the blurred line between right and wrong. It’s a very short yet deeply thought provoking novel which I would highly recommend to anyone looking to read something full of love, identity and friendship but with a disturbing yet crucial message which will leave you changed.
