OCTOBER 2024
From Yosemite to the Grand Canyon Exploring the Best of America’s National Parks
“There is nothing so American as our national parks … the fundamental idea behind the parks … is that the country belongs to the people, that it is in process of making for the enrichment of the lives of all of us.” — Franklin D. Roosevelt According to Lonely Planet, October is the ideal time to explore America’s national parks. From the towering mountains to the cascading waterfalls, nothing is as beautiful. Two of our family favorites are the Grand Canyon and Yosemite, but to be honest, it’s tough to choose which national park is the best — each one holds its own special beauty. We visited many national parks with our kids when they were young, and the memories are irreplaceable. America’s national parks offer experiences second to none. When we travel abroad in Europe, we always tell people they must visit these national treasures. There’s nothing like the energy you feel in places like Yosemite, where nature's charm leaves you awestruck. One of our favorite times to visit Yosemite is during the “shoulder season” (the time between high and low season) when the crowds are lighter, but the beauty still surrounds you. Between the waterfalls, wildlife, and nature, there’s so much to appreciate. Our kids, having watched the movie Free Solo, were especially excited to see Half Dome in person. It brought the movie to life in a way photos or descriptions could never match. During one trip, we stayed at a lodge in Yosemite, and the kids absolutely loved it. The sense of adventure and being so close to nature really left an impact on them. One of the most incredible trips we’ve ever taken was a road trip through Redwood National Forest, Cannon Beach, and Olympic National Park. Each park had its own unique feel, but Olympic National Park stood out to us — it felt almost like a rainforest. Walking through it felt like stepping into another world! I think it’s amazing how you can go from towering trees to misty coastlines to snowy peaks in just a few days of travel.
There’s something about visiting America’s national parks that gives you a different perspective. Standing at the edge of the Grand Canyon or beneath the towering trees in a redwood forest can make you feel small but in a connected, meaningful way. It reminds you of the vastness of the world and the beauty that exists beyond the hustle and bustle of daily life. For our family, these moments of awe and connection have created lasting memories and an appreciation for nature.
Every visit reminds us of the magic that exists in our own backyard. Whether it’s watching the sun rise over the Grand Canyon or hiking through the redwoods or Yosemite, it’s always such an amazing experience. For anyone who hasn’t yet visited America’s national
parks, this time of year is the perfect time to do so. The weather is cooler, the crowds are smaller, and the beauty is unbelievable — I promise your jaw will drop.

The great outdoors is full of incredible wildlife and nature, just waiting for us to get out and explore. Whether you’re going to your local arboretum, a national park, or even your own backyard, you can always find something unique to look at. Sometimes, turning toward the sky will provide an amazing opportunity to see something special. We can find birds almost anywhere. If you’re looking for a new way to keep your kids entertained while educating them, looking for birds can be a great family bonding activity. Start by researching the birds in your area, both permanent residents and those migrating. You’ll likely see common birds in your backyard or around the neighborhood, but you may need to travel to a local park to see some of the more unique species. At first, your kids may need some help finding different birds. Binoculars might be too difficult to use, so it’s up to you to point them in the right direction. Look out for nests, cracked seeds, and other signs indicating birds are nearby. You don’t have to use only your eyes when searching the skies and trees for birds; listen intently, too! Tracking birds through their calls will help alert you to the species you’re searching for and where to look. EYES TO THE SKY A Family Guide to Birdwatching
To keep your kids’ attention as you bird watch, you may need to make a game out of it. Create a scavenger hunt to find five birds in your hometown or the area you’re visiting. You can get specific with unique species or keep it broad by having them look for hawks, ducks, etc. Let your child take the lead, encouraging them to point out birds they see or hear instead of relying on you to tell them. You can even encourage your kids to mimic the different birdcalls they hear. Birdwatching is a great way to get your kids outdoors exploring nature. It could even lead to a full-time passion or career in the future.
