placed at Jesus’ feet. When Jesus saw their faith He said, “ Son, thy sins be forgiven thee.” Some who heard the words became angry that Jesus said that He could forgive sins, for they did not believe that He was the Son of God. The Son of God said, “Arise, and take up thy couch [bed], and go into thine house.” At once the sick man arose and took up his bed as Jesus had commanded and went home. How amazed the peo ple were at this wonderful miracle per formed by the Lord Jesus! Today the Lord Jesus is waiting to forgive the sins of those who receive Him as their personal Saviour. He also can heal their bodies if it is His will. Truly, “ Thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive; and plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon thee.”

on a cot a sick friend, a man with palsy. They could not come near to the house, let alone enter it and bring their friend to Jesus. Some people might have .been discouraged and decided to try to come back to Jesus another day. Not these men! Quickly they climbed the outside stairs leading to the roof of the house. Carefully they laid their friend down upon the roof while they removed some of the tiles to make a hole over the place where God’s Son was standing. Prob ably one of the four ran home to get some rope to tie around the cot. As the Lord Jesus was telling about God, those who were listening heard a noise over head and soon saw that a hole was ap pearing in the ceiling. When the hole was large enough, the sick man was slowly lowered through the ceiling and for Every Age % BOOK

The mission to which Jesus called the Twelve and the instructions which He gave them in preparation for it, provide guidance for discovering the mission He has for us and the preparation we need to discharge that mission. Although there is a definite dispensational aspect to this lesson yet there are principles here which are operative in every dis pensation, the present one in particular. Let us be reminded again that Matthew is the Gospel of the King and His King dom. The emphasis is continually upon these ideas. The Apostles Called and Empowered 10:1 In connection with this verse it should be remembered that already the King dom of the heavens had been announced as at hand. Its nature and laws had been set forth by the King (Chs. 5-7). The King had shown His power by which the citizens of His Kingdom should carry on their work. It was now necessary that some method of propagation should be established for the Kingdom. He chose to work through certain men whom He called and empowered. It is interesting to note how often it is set forth in the Word that when God had a great work to do He called men to labor with Him in bringing about the desired end. So now He called twelve men to proclaim His message. Having called them, He empowered them for their responsibility. It is always so. God-called men are fitted for the service they are to render. The Apostles Commissioned 10:5-7 “ These twelve Jesus sent forth.” The dispensational aspect of this part of the lesson is definitely seen in that Jesus sent the Twelve forth only to “ the lost sheep of the house of Israel” (v. 6). The door was not yet opened unto the Gen tiles. They were to go forth declaring the fact that the King was present and in order to impress their hearers they were to perform certain miracles of mercy. These miracles were the credentials of their ministry. One thing of particular importance to he noted in their ministry is that as they went they were to preach. In the age o f grace in which we live, this is the great responsibility of every disciple of the Lord. God has ordained that “ by the foolishness of preaching” (1 Cor. 1:21) men should be saved. Preaching is the simple declaration of the great truths related to the gospel. It does not have to be done behind a pulpit. It can he done and should be done by every believer. It is the business of wit nessing for Christ (Acts 1:8).
