Outline: (1 ) Nehemiah, th e Cup-bearer—• A Manly Man. (2) Nehem iah, th e City-Builder— The Manifestation of His Man­ liness. Introduction: acter of Nehemiah which are ou tstand ­ ing. He was a sincere man, not a politician in th e sense in which we are compelled to use th a t term in these days. He would be tru e to his king, but he would never have bowed th e knee to Baal. He was a sympathetic man— his h ea rt went out tow ard his fellows.

The book of Nehem iah continues th e story of th e re tu rn of Israel from cap­ tivity. Thirteen years afte r E zra’s ex­ pedition, Nehemiah was led of th e Lord to journey to Jerusa- LESSON lem and rebuild th e EXPOSITION w a l l s which were T. C. H orton broken down. He is not to be confused w ith the Nehemiah mentioned in Ezra 2:2 who accompanied Zerubbabel in th e first retu rn . (1) NEHEMIAH, th e CUP-BEAR­ ER—a Manly Man. Nehem iah is an example of a clean- cut, honest, honorable layman, w ith an intelligent m ind and a big h eart,— a real manly man. He was cup-bearer to the king, a position of high honor and confidence, sim ilar to th a t of th e bu t­ ler to th e king of Egypt who was in ­ strum en tal in lifting Joseph to a place of au tho rity next to the king himself. He was a sp iritu al man— he believed in God, in His promises, and adapted himself to conditions. When th e sto ry of conditions in Je ru ­ salem was brought to him, he sa t down and wept. His soul was sick. His people In great reproach and affliction and th e gates burned! But why need he_ care? Did he not have a good posi­ tion? Must he not look out for Num­ ber One? . But Nehemiah had a h eart like th a t of E lisha (2 Ki. 8 :1 1 ). He mourned and fasted and prayed. And th ere was need of fasting and prayer. Someone must always bear th e burden of sin w ith th e Lord.
