JUNE 10, 1923 JESUS TEACHES HUMILITY— John 13:1-17

Stranger, having taken a journey from His F a th e r’s h eart to a lost world. Now He is going hack home, to the F a th e r’s bosom. (John 1 :1 1 ).';;' • “ H e ca me u nt o h is o w n , a n d his receiv ed h im no t.” (7 :6 ). ‘T h e n J e su s said un to th em , M y is not y e t c o m e ; b u t y o u r time is a r ea d y .” (1 2 :2 3 ). “A n d J es us a ns we red th em sa yin h o u r is c o m e , that the S o n o f m a n b e g lo ri fi ed .” Jesus knew all things. He knew th e condition of the disciples’ h earts. He knew the malice of the Jews. He knew th e, h ea rt of Judas. He knew th a t the disciples would desert Him. Yet He loved them. He loved them to th e u t­ termost. He is unchanging. His mercy endureth forever (Psa. 118:1) and so does His love. Here we have exem­ plified the soul of service— to love in spite of all things. If we lo Him, we will love to serve Him (1 John 5 :3 ). Our love is m anifest in deeds—-not words— as was God’s (John 3 :1 6 ). We love Him, and because we love Him, we love to serve Him, and in serving others we serve Him (Eph. 6 :7 ). “ W it h g ood w il l do in g service, L o r d a n d n ot to m e n . ” Is th ere anything too good to give to Him, or too g reat to do for Him? Introduction: The th irte en th chapter of John is the “Servant Chapter” of th e “Holy of holies” comprised in th e th irte en th to the seventeenth chapters of th is Gospel. Jesus had given His last message, in grace to th e world. The “ voice from heaven” had testified to Him (1 2 :2 8 ). “ T h e n th ere c a m e a voice He had given His last cry to the world (12 :44 -50 ), and now He desires to be alone w ith His disciples th a t He may give them a special message. The upper room had been prepared for them , now th e ir h ea rts must be pre­ pared. He is to teach them th e sub- limost tru th s ever made known to man. (1) THE SOUL SERVICE— LOVE. (Jesus seen as a P roph et). “When Jesus knew th a t his hour was come.” .(v. 1) W hat hour? The hour of H is departure. In the Gospel of John we have Jesus presented as a
