The Performers

Trumpeter Sean Jones has released eight albums with Mack Avenue Records and is an internationally recognized educator serving as President of the Jazz Educators

Pianist and composer Alex Brown is quickly emerging at the forefront of a new genera-

tion of artists. In 2021, he released his second album as a leader, The Dark Fire Sessions. As an arranger and orchestrator, his music has been performed by premier groups that include the Philadelphia Or- chestra. Brown served as a Visiting Artist in Jazz Studies at the Johns Hopkins University’s Peabody Institute. Brown is a YAMAHA artist. Bassist Kris Funn was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland. Kris joined the Howard University Jazz Ensemble for two years and has since appeared at nearly every major jazz festival in the world and has performed on six continents with Kenny Garrett, Christian Scott, Joey Alexander, Kamasi Washington, Nicholas Payton, Pharoah Sanders, and more. Kris is part of the jazz faculty at the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins. Born into a family of illustrious Italian musicians, vocalist Irene Jalenti

Network. He holds the Richard and Elizabeth Case Chair of Jazz at John Hopkins University’s Peabody Institute and is Artistic Director for Carnegie Hall’s NYO Jazz ensemble. He is featured on three GRAMMY nominated albums by Dianne Reeves, Nancy Wilson, and Gerald Wilson.

Todd Marcus is one of the few artists worldwide to focus on the bass clarinet as a main instru- ment in modern jazz with his large and small ensembles. His straight-ahead playing and compositions swing with fiery and introspec- tive intensity, offer a strong lyrical sensibility, and often incorporate the Middle Eastern influences of his Egyptian-American heritage. Marcus has annually been voted a Rising Star in Downbeat Magazine’s Annual Critics Poll.

Quincy Phillips is a drummer, pianist, and an organist at his home church, East Baltimore Deliverance. He graduated from Howard University. Phillips performed for President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama for the “Smithsonian Salutes Ray Charles: In Performance at the White House.” Phillips won a Jazz Composition award for his arrangement of “Alone Together” at the IAJE conference and is a member of GRAMMY Award-winning Christian McBride Big Band.

has followed a singular creative path as a jazz vocalist, songwriter, and arranger who draws on an international array of kindred musical currents. A creative force on the Baltimore scene since 2010, she possesses a strikingly rich cello-like tone and is equally impressive improvising a scat solo or interpreting a song with soulful intensity across five languages.

About Quakers

Stony Run Friends Meeting belongs to a branch of Quakers that holds an unprogrammed meeting for worship, which means that we have no set prayers, sermons, altars, scripture readings, or hymns. All who are present silently join in prayer and medi- tation and, if moved by the Divine Spirit, give expression to

The history of the Religious Society of Friends, whose members are called Friends or Quakers, goes back 350 years. History of the Quakers The Quaker movement began in England during a time of great unrest, much of which was rooted in religious conflict. George Fox (1624-1691), the founder of the Quaker movement, had become disenchanted with organized religion. He became a seeker of religious enlightenment and a way to gain direct access to God. He traveled through England and other coun- tries sharing his brand of religion, asking people to live by the Inner Light, and demonstrate their faith by doing good deeds. What do Quakers Believe? To Quakers, the ultimate source of all truth, and therefore of all authority, is the Inner Light. Truth is found by looking within, where one can always find “that of God.” Quakers observe no dogma, creed, or ritual. However, we are committed to certain beliefs and practices, including respect for one another and all peoples; hope that the search for truth will lead to right action; and trust in the divine element in each person to resist evil and to do good. We understand that one’s outward life needs to bear witness to truth discerned inwardly. We commit to live simply so that others can simply live. We believe the Inner Light is the manifestation of the Divine. The Inner Light is not one’s conscience but that which enlightens one’s conscience. We discern the Inner Light by silently and patiently waiting for the Divine to speak to us during what we call meeting for worship .

prayer or speak in the spirit of worship. It is through the weekly meeting for worship that we seek spiritual nourishment and inspiration to go back into, and provide service to, the broader society. Commitment to Peace, Equality, and Social Justice

We believe that faith must be expressed through action and service to society – to serve society is to serve the Divine. Friends have engaged in social action including the abolition- ist movement, World War II relief work, refugee work, and the civil rights movement. We strive to achieve peace, racial equal- ity, gender equality, prison reform, the abolition of capital punishment, and a living wage for all. We condemn war, but not a specific group of people, as we seek to establish a frame- work for reconciliation. We believe that those who are called enemies are, in fact, friends separated by misunderstanding. The Religious Society of Friends historically belongs to a group of churches advocating for pacifism or nonresistance. Peace churches also include the Church of the Brethren and Mennonites, including the Amish. Meeting for Worship at Stony Run Friends Meeting All are invited to join us for our meeting for worship, which is held twice on Sundays, at 9:30 and 11:00 a.m. Please visit www.stonyrunfriends.org or call the office at 443-703-2590.

Middle Grades Partnership

Change a Child ’ s Story

Make a Difference. CASA empowers volunteers to advocate for children who have been removed from their homes due to abuse and neglect. CASAs (Court Appointed Special Advocates) are constant, caring adults who see children through the uncertainty of foster care and speak for them in court. We believe that every child deserves a safe, loving, and permanent home.

We unite public and private school communities to create indelible experiences that enable students to thrive as friends, scholars, leaders, and citizens.

The Immigration Working Group (part of the Peace & Social Justice Committee at Stony Run Friends Meeting) continues to support families from Syria, Egypt, Sudan, and other countries as they adjust to living in the US. For the summer of 2022, we were grateful to again receive a grant from the Miles White Beneficial Society to take the children on day trips. This summer we added swimming lessons at the home of a volunteer. We had even more children from the African Diaspora Friends join us and everyone loved making new friends! If you would like to become involved, please contact Maria Brown, Rosalie Dance, Zawadi Dance or Ann Kehinde. No special skills required; just consistency once you get in- volved and an openness and appreciation for other cultures!
