HCSO Launches SALT Program to Empower Seniors BUILDING STRONGER BONDS
In 2024, the HCSO introduced a forward-thinking initiative aimed at strengthening ties between law enforcement and the senior community. The new SALT Program ( S eniors A nd L aw Enforcement T ogether) promotes collaboration and ensures seniors in Henry County feel safer, more informed, and better connected. The SALT program, spearheaded by the HCSO’s Community Relations Unit, is a partnership between law enforcement, public safety organizations, and the older adult community. Known as the Henry SALT Council, the initiative focuses on reducing crime against seniors, increasing public safety awareness, and improving the quality of life for older residents across the county. WHAT IS S.A.L.T.? The Henry SALT Council brings together three key groups—public safety, criminal justice, and the senior population—to address the unique safety concerns of older adults. Sheriff Reginald Scandrett called the initiative “a vital step in ensuring the safety and well-being of our senior citizens. By working together, we’re building a community where everyone feels secure and supported.” The SALT Program is more than just a safety initiative—it’s a movement to empower seniors.
The program aims to:
Reduce senior crime victimization through education and prevention. Provide public safety seminars and newsletters for seniors. Train senior volunteers to assist law enforcement. Build camaraderie and community involvement. Programs and activities include the Senior Volunteers in Policing (VIPs) and the Senior Citizens Police Academy . Regular meetings and guest speakers also provide valuable resources and information tailored to seniors. The program also distributes newsletters to keep seniors informed about crime alerts, local incidents, and upcoming events, ensuring those without internet access remain connected. A CALL TO ACTION The HCSO invites seniors to join the SALT Council and take an active role in enhancing community safety.
