One of the most common explanations dates back to the fishing industry. In Newfoundland and other coastal communities, fishermen painted their homes and fishing sheds in bright colours to make them more visible in foggy, stormy weather. The Atlantic coast is notorious for its thick fog, and colourful houses helped guide fishermen safely back to shore.
