373. Rare 1945-46 Caramelo Deportivo #73 Napoleon Reyes - SGC GD 2 MINIMUM BID: $500

The 1941 Play Ball set is considered one of the most beautiful and popular issues of the gum card era. Featuring brilliantly colorized photos, many culled from the 1940 Play Ball issue, the 72-card set features numerous Hall of Famers and highly desirable cards, including those of Joe DiMaggio, Ted Williams and the first card of Pee Wee Reese. The set is extremely desirable among collectors today, due in part to its beautiful design and player selection, its difficult high-number series and its manageable size. The last major mainstream card issue before World War II, the 1941 Play Ball issue remains extremely sought after. Presented here is an extremely attractive complete set, carefully assembled by a veteran hobbyist with a keen eye for sharpness and minimal surface wear, with less focus on centering. As a result, the overall set would carry a lower technical grade despite the sharpness and richness of color. A condition breakdown would be 1% EX/MT, 4% EX; 15% VG/EX, 62% VG; and 18% GOOD with a few lesser. We took the liberty of submitting five cards to PSA, which graded as follows: #13 Foxx (PSA VG+ 3.5), #14 Williams (PSA VG 3), #18 Greenberg (PSA VG 3), #54 Reese (PSA GOOD 2), #71 DiMaggio (PSA VG+ 3.5). The remaining keys grade as follows: #6 Hubbell (VG), #8 Ott (VG), #10 Vaughan (VG), #15 Cronin (VG), #19 Gehringer (G), #20 Ruffing (VG), #60 Klein (G), #64 Doerr (VG), and #72 Gomez (VG). One of the most important and highly- coveted of all the prewar baseball card sets. 72 cards total.
