Love of the Game Auctions - 10th Anniversary Auction

382. 1951 Bowman Near-Complete Set (322/324) MINIMUM BID: $1,000

The 1951 Bowman set is possibly second only to the 1952 Topps issue for the most important and widely-collected issue of the 1950s. In addition to the rookie cards of both Mickey Mantle and Willie Mays, the issue includes the rookie cards of Whitey Ford, Nellie Fox and Monte Irvin, as well as cards of important Hall of Famers Yogi Berra, Roy Campanella, Duke Snider, Pee Wee Reese, Phil Rizzuto and Ted Williams. Presented here is a near-complete set, missing just the cards of Mickey Mantle and Willie Mays (examples of which can be found elsewhere in the auction as individual lots). The set itself is strong, an exceptional collector-grade set carefully assembled with cards that predominantly present well for the technical grade. A condition breakdown of the set is approximately 3% EX or better, 18% VG/EX, 43% VG, $26% GOOD, 9% FAIR and a few lesser. A breakdown of the key cards would be as follows: #1 Ford (G), #2 Berra (G), #3 Roberts (VG), #7 Hodges (G), #26 Rizzuto (G), #30 Feller (G), #31 Campanella (G), #32 Snider (VG), #46 Kell (VG/EX), #50 Mize (VG), #53 Lemon (VG), #58 Slaughter (VG), #62 Boudreau (VG/EX), #78 Wynn (VG), #80 Reese (VG/EX), #134 Spahn (G), #151 Doby (F), #165 Williams (G), #181 Stengel (VG), #186 Ashburn (VG/EX), #198 Irvin (F), #232 Fox (VG), #233 Durocher (VG/EX), #282 Frisch (F - Miscut), #290 Dickey (F), #295 Lopez (VG). An outstanding example of a highly-desirable set, missing just two cards for completion, each available elsewhere in this auction. 322 cards total.

383. 1952 Mother’s Cookies PCL Near-Complete Set (63/64) MINIMUM BID: $1,000

One of the most popular regional minor league card sets ever, the Mother’s Cookies cards featured Pacific Coast League players. Distributed only on the west coast, the colorful round- cornered cards were included in packages of cookies. The cards vary slightly in size, but are approximately 2 13/16” x 3 1/2”, and are typically susceptible to condition flaws due to chipping at the colorful edges and the thin stock on which they were printed. The set does feature a number of variations as well as cards of Hall of Famers Mel Ott and Chuck Gordon, as well as ballplayer-turned-TV Star Chuck Connors. Five of the cards in the set - #11 Bill MacCawley, #16 Bob Talbot, #29 Buddy Peterson, #37 Roy Welmaker, and #43 Joe Erautt - are considered scarce. Presented here is a particularly high-grade set, missing just the ultra-scarce #43 Erautt card. Assembled by former Baltimore Orioles broadcaster Ted Patterson, a collector notorious for seeking out higher-grade cards prior to the advent of third-party grading, the cards virtually all appear high-grade, though some possess minor technical flaws typically related to light chipping at the edges and corners, or faint toning on the reverse. We selected one card - the key card of Chuck Connors - to be graded by PSA, and received the grade of VG-EX 4 (MK) due to light staining at the lower left, as as the reverse. We subsequently submitted 13 additional cards to SGC, receiving the following assessments: SGC NM-MT 8 (5 cards): #5 Grace, #13 Haney, #17 Singleton, #32 Ott (HOF), #42 Lyons. SGC NM-MT+ 7.5 (2 cards): #33 Chapman, #45 Baker. SGC NM 7 (3 cards): #25 O’Doul, #37 Welmaker, #58 Myers. SGC EX-MT+ 6.5 (3 cards): #6 Basinski, #9 Marshall, #19 Gordon (HOF). The entire set breaks down as 6% NM-MT, 16% NM, 33% EX/MT, 29% EX, 11% VG/EX, 3% GOOD with 2% lesser. Card #11 of MacCawley appears EX/MT, with #16 Talbot EX/MT, #29 Peterson FAIR. Card #39 of Chuck Stevens has been autographed in blue Sharpie along the left edge, not authenticated by almost certainly signed personally for Patterson. An outstanding nearly complete set of one of the most important minor league card issues ever produced. 63 cards total.
