390. 1952 Bowman Complete Set (252) MINIMUM BID: $1,000 Featuring 252 color reproductions of photographs offset by a facsimile signature, the 1952 Bowman set is known for its beauty. Considered one of the most attractive sets of the 1950s largely due to its simplicity, each card offers a redemption prize of a baseball cap in exchange for five wrappers and $0.50. The set remains extremely popular today, due in part to the presence of second-year cards of Mickey Mantle and Willie Mays, as well as a strong overall player selection. The tough second series also offers collectors a challenge. Grading 9% EX with a few better, 22% VG/EX, 51% VG, 15% GOOD, and 2% FAIR and lesser with a few trimmed, this complete set is quite pleasing to the eye. The majority of the condition issues lie in simple handling-related flaws, with evenly-worn corners and mild surface wear. Additional production-
related flaws like wax stains and centering are also an issue. While such issues reduce the technical grade of the set, the cards themselves boast strong eye appeal. A breakdown of the set’s ke cards include #1 Yogi Berra (VG/EX), #8 Pee Wee Reese (VG), #11 Ralph Kiner (VG), #21 Nellie Fox (VG), #23 Bob Lemon (VG/EX), #43 Bob Feller (VG/EX), #44 Roy Campanella (F), #52 Phil Rizzuto (SGC VG+ 3.5), #53 Richie Ashburn (VG), #80 Gil Hodges (VG/EX), #101 Mickey Mantle (PSA VG+ 3.5), #115 Larry Doby (VG), #116 Duke Snider (VG), #142 Early Wynn (VG), #145 Johnny Mize (VG/EX), #146 Leo Durocher (F), #156 Warren Spahn (VG), #196 Stan Musial (SGC VG 3), #217 Casey Stengel (G), #281 Willie Mays (SGC A, Evidence of Trimming). A clean and consistent set, one of the most popular issues of the 1950s. 252 cards total.
