Love of the Game Auctions - 10th Anniversary Auction

421. 1961 Topps Complete Set (587) MINIMUM BID: $1,000

The elegant, simplistic design of the 1961 Topps set is a stark contrast to the previous two years where the card fronts depended heavily on graphic design and color. For 1961, Topps’ designer elected to let the main card design focus purely on sharp color photography, augmenting the photo with a simple player, team, and position ID. The set also includes a number of special subsets, including Sporting News All-Star cards, MVP cards, World Series cards and more. This results in a great number of cards of the game’s key players, a collecting challenge only increased by the presence of an extremely difficult run of high numbers that remains among the tougher high number series of all the Topps issues. Presented here is a clean, midgrade example of the set, with the majority of the cards falling at the VG/EX or VG level. A condition breakdown is as follows: 2% EX/MT, 16% EX, 40% VG/ EX, 36% VG, 6% GOOD and a few lesser or trimmed. We have chosen six cards to be graded by SGC: #35 Santo (SGC VG/EX+ 4.5), #290 Musial (SGC VG/EX 4), #300 Mantle (SGC VG/EX 4), #443 Snider

(SGC NM 7), #475 Mantle AS (SGC Authentic/Miscut), and #578 Mantle AS (SGC EX 5). The additional key cards in the set grade as follows: #2 Maris (VG), #10 B. Robinson (EX), #20 Roberts (EX), #30 Fox (VG), #88 Ashburn (VG), #120 Mathews (EX), #141 Williams (VG), #150 Mays (G - Miscut), #160 Ford (EX), #200 Spahn (VG/EX), #211 Gibson (VG/EX), #260 Drysdale (EX), #261 Yastrzemski (EX/MT), #344 Koufax (VG), #350 Banks (G), #360 F.
