36. 1909-11 T206 Ty Cobb (HOF - Bat On Shoulder) - SGC GD+ 2.5

38. 1911 T205 Honest Ty Cobb (HOF) - PSA GOOD 2

Wildly popular as the Tigers were on a tear from 1907- 09, appearing in (and losing) three straight World Series’, Ty Cobb graced the T206 set with four cards. This Piedmont 150 (Factory 25) pose was issued in the second wave of T206 and features the bright yellow and green “Bat on Shoulder” pose. Graded by SGC at a 2.5, the front exhibits some period tobacco product residue and a small spot of paper loss on the left border. The registration

This is a well-known image of the Georgia Peach, reproduced in many articles about the T205 set over the last century. Featured here with a tougher Honest Long Cut brand reverse, PSA’s grade of 2 looks spot on, with some mild but visible creasing affecting the central image and accounting for the usual minor maladies that affect these condition sensitive cards. A small bit of paper loss shows on the reverse, no doubt occurring when the card was extricated from a period scrapbook. Despite the accuracy

and color are superb, with a subtle sunset transition midfield and a faraway grandstand barely visible in the gloaming. The reverse shows signs of having once been affixed to taped mount at the top and also has a small dot of foxing or toning on the right side. Cobb attracts a strong following among vintage collectors to this day, a trend that shows no sign of abating.

of the technical grade, the card appears sharp, with a colorful, clean image and square corners, one of the finer examples you are likely to find at this grade level.

39. 1911 T205 Christy Mathewson (HOF) - SGC EX 5

37. 1909-11 T206 Ty Cobb (HOF - Green Background) - PSA PR 1

Particularly strong and sharp example, this Mathewson boasts a clear, rich image with the typical light chipping at the left and right edges that extends to all four corners, a common condition malady among T205s due to the sensitive borders. One of the more beautiful and highly sought-after cards from the popular T205 “Gold Border” issue featuring an embellished illustration derived from a famous Paul Thompson portrait photo. MINIMUM BID: $1,000

The T206 Ty Cobb “Green Background” portrait card continues to be the most desirable of that issue’s four Cobbs, outpacing the others as prices skyrocket, due to perceived scarcity and also due to its pure beauty. This example has been graded POOR 1 by PSA, the technical grade resulting from overall wear and a pronounced horizontal crease breaking the surface of the card near Cobb’s neckline. Cobb’s image remains strong, the bulk of the wear and soiling to the card appearing

outside the image area of the card. The primary condition flaw here appears on the reverse in the form of a large area of paper loss at the top right, likely the result of scrapbook removal. Despite the accuracy of the technical grade, a strong example of one of the popular issue’s most important cards.
