BROOKLYN VS. NEW YORK WORLD SERIES B etween 1941 and 1956, the New York Yankees and Brooklyn Dodgers played seven World Series, many of them among the most memorable Fall Classics. The teams played in the same city, the Dodgers in Ebbets Field, which was a mere 15 miles south of Yankee Stadium. The rivalry was arguably the most important in baseball history, and has been the subject of dozens of books and articles in the decades since. Baseball fans in the city actually had a choice of three glamorous teams—the Giants played just across the Harlem River from the Yankees, and had great stars of their own. Lo- cals argued about their favorites: Pee Wee or Rizzuto? Campy or Yogi? Willie, Mickey or the Duke? The fans of these teams rooted for some of the more legendary players in history, and if you were lucky enough to attend one of these 44 Dodger-Yankee World Series games, there is a fair chance that you witnessed baseball magic. In Game 1 of the 1955 World Series, with the Dodgers trailing 6-4 in the eighth at Yankee Stadium, Jackie Robinson stole home. The Dodgers lost the game 6-5, but this single play is still debated 67 years later. Yankee par- tisans insist he was out, Dodger fans know he was safe, and photographs and video have been trotted out by both sides. This was just one play, and it is by no means the only play that has helped define this great series of games for so many decades. BY MARK ARMOUR TICKET STUB COLLECTION
