Love of the Game Auctions - 10th Anniversary Auction

After four batters Bevens had gotten two outs, but walked two, one intentional. Dodger manager Burt Shotten then pinch-hit Cookie Lavagetto for Eddie Stanky. Lavagetto had been a four- time All-Star before the War but was now a part-timer getting what would be his final at bat in a big league uniform. And it would be a big one, as he crushed a pitch off the wall in right center, the Dodgers first and only hit, which plated both runners and gave Brooklyn a 3-2 victory and tied the series. The star of Game 5 was Yankee pitcher Spec Shea, who tossed a four-hitter in his 2-1 victory. In fact, he singled in the first

run of the game, before Joe DiMaggio’s fifth inning home run proved decisive. Game 6 was a back-and-forth affair won by the Dodgers 8-6, which featured a memorable catch in deep left field by Brooklyn’s Al Gionfriddo that foiled a home run bid by DiMaggio. The Yankees needed much less drama to take the final game, 5-2. The Dodgers knocked Shea, going for his third win, out of the box in the second inning, but Bevens and Joe Page shut Brooklyn down for the final 7 2/3 innings to wrap up the Yan- kees 11th World Series title.
