BUILD A BULLY-FREE ENVIRONMENT Practical Tips for Keeping Your Child Safe Online

The beginning of a new school year brings all sorts of wonderful memories for the kids in our community. They’ll learn lessons that interest them and potentially put them on the path toward a long and fulfilling career, meet new friends whom they’ll cherish for years, and make memories throughout each and every day. As parents, we want our kids to enjoy going to school, but it’s not always easy for them. They may struggle with certain subjects or struggle to maintain friendships. However, another obstacle can affect them negatively and damage their mental health — bullying.

embarrassing from your kid’s account is funny, but your child likely won’t feel the same way. Encourage your kids to keep their passwords private and never share that information with anyone, not even their best friend!

Additionally, teens need to think before they post anything. If they want to post a photo of themselves or something they’re doing, they should consider whether they want the rest of the world to see it. Posting inappropriate pictures or comments across any social media platform could come back to haunt them. And if they get a message from someone they don’t know or don’t get along with, it’s best to ignore and delete it. This will give them control over the situation and prevent them from responding in retaliation. As a final note, it’s our responsibility to ensure our children aren’t on the other side of things, bullying their classmates. Check in with them and monitor their online activity to make sure they

For the past five years, the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) has recognized National Bullying Prevention Month in October. The AAO encourages all orthodontists, their teams, and

patients to take a stand against bullying as part of its Bullying Bites campaign. At Alborzi Orthodontics, we strongly believe in this initiative and try to participate in some aspect every year. If you come into our office on Oct. 18, you may notice our team wearing orange in honor of Unity Day, the signature event of National Bullying Prevention Month. Bullying can take many different forms, and in recent years, there has been an increase in cyberbullying thanks to the internet and social media. A study from the Pew Research Center found that 59% of teens in America experienced cyberbullying in some form. The most common kinds of cyberbullying harassment include offensive name- calling, spreading false rumors, receiving explicit images without consent, physical threats, and stalking by asking constant questions about their whereabouts. Bullying can be traumatic in any form, but our kids can take simple steps to avoid becoming the target of cyberbullying. For starters, they need to be conscious of where they’re logging in to their social media accounts and make sure they log out when using a device they don’t own. Their friends may think posting something

aren’t making life more difficult for their peers. If you notice they’re participating in harmful cyberbullying behaviors, talk with them about why they’re in the wrong. They likely wouldn’t think it’s funny if someone was treating them in a similar manner.

When it comes to bullying, we should all aim to follow the golden rule — in everything, treat others the way you would want

them to treat you. We all deserve to live our lives without fear of harassment or bullying.

Say Goodbye to Black Triangles A recent study discovered a new way to fix gingival embrasures: gaps that look like little black triangles between teeth. These black triangles can form for of all restorations were flawless. Not a single restoration showed detachment,

Improving dental hygiene habits, getting veneers, or receiving specialized endodontic treatment were other strategies used to rectify this situation. Now, there’s a more effective treatment to help remove gingival embrasures.

While this recent study is promising, taking preventive action will help you avoid black triangles altogether. It all starts with proper dental hygiene. Floss daily with a thorough but gentle touch, brush multiple times a day, preferably with an electric toothbrush, and limit your risk for gum disease by eating a balanced diet, not smoking, and reducing stress levels. WHY SPECIALIZED CARE MATTERS FOR YOUR SMILE Dentists vs. Orthodontists

Have you ever gone to a dental office and noticed that they offered orthodontic services without an orthodontist on staff? While not every dentist offers orthodontics, some believe they can align and straighten a patient’s teeth as well as the average orthodontist, leading them to provide these services in their practices. However, orthodontic treatment is not necessarily a quick fix, and most patients will benefit from seeing an actual orthodontist for orthodontic treatment. In the state of California, dentists can offer orthodontic treatment, but it might not be as effective as treatment from an orthodontist. Dentists focus on overall oral health, often treating decayed teeth and removing teeth that no longer serve their function. They are incredibly knowledgeable about their field but don’t receive the same level of specialized training that

think the same way when your oral health requires the assistance of an orthodontist, endodontist, or other oral specialist.

So, what sets an orthodontist apart from a general dentist? In most cases, it comes down to schooling and practice. Both dentists and dental specialists graduate from dental school, but only dental specialists, like orthodontists, continue their education. They’ll study and train for two additional years at an accredited program to become experts in their specialty area. From there, orthodontists limit their practice to their dental specialty, meaning they focus on

orthodontic care every minute they spend at work. In comparison, dentists will provide general care and, in some cases, specialty care throughout every day. Our office is focused on your bite and the alignment of your teeth. We want nothing more than to help you achieve the straight and healthy smile you’ve

orthodontists receive to do their jobs efficiently and effectively. Think about it this way: Would you want your family doctor to operate on you when you need serious surgery? You should

always dreamed about. Don’t settle for good enough when it comes to your oral health!

this aromatic beverage than Twinings Tea Shop. Opened in 1706, the shop quickly became known for having the finest teas around and continues to serve tasty cups. Twinings has been the official tea supplier to the royal family since 1837, and its original logo remains on the building. HIGHGATE CEMETERY If you want to see the city’s spookier side, the Highgate Cemetery is one of the most impressive of London’s “Magnificent Seven” park cemeteries. The Victorian Gothic-style tombs and buildings were built in 1839, and it has a history of vampires, too! Multiple Hammer horror films were shot there in the 1970s, and two magicians famously challenged each other to find and kill a vampire there around the same time. Neither was successful, but it remains a popular site for lovers of the paranormal and the occult.

THE FIRST PUBLIC DRINKING FOUNTAIN London is home to perhaps the most fascinating water fountain in the world. This simple granite basin, built in 1859 and adorned with the words “Replace the cup,” was the first public water fountain. Before then, water was precious, monopolized by water companies, rare to come by, and undrinkable. As people pushed for public access to water, a philanthropist named Samuel Gurney created this fountain, attached to the gates of the St. Sepulchre- without-Newgate Church on Holborn Hill. It became an instant hit. An estimated 7,000 people would stop for a drink daily when it first hit the scene. The city has many hidden treasures, whether you hope to catch a vampire in one of London’s historic cemeteries or sip on a culturally esteemed drink.

Big Ben’s massive clock face, London Bridge’s walkway, and Buckingham Palace — London is known worldwide for its many historic landmarks. But tucked into all its layers of culture are truly unusual and lesser-known attractions to explore. So, brush up on your Monty Python, pack an umbrella for London’s rainy days, and set a course for the most unique experiences England’s capital has to offer. TWININGS TEA SHOP A trip to London wouldn’t be complete without tea time, and there’s no better place to explore the city’s historic love affair with
