To date, Redpath has completed ventilation access on the 12-level pump chamber and will commence with the Intermediate pump chamber development in August 2026. “The development work, which is similar to previous work executed at Northam, includes large excavation (pump chambers) and will continue into early 2029,” explains Deonarain. Redpath is leveraging advanced technologies, including Sandvik underground mining equipment, to execute the pump chamber development works. The deployment of this state- of-the-art fleet is expected to optimise operational efficiency while maintaining the highest standards of safety, quality, and productivity. Discussing the challenges associated with working at the world’s deepest platinum project, Deonarain concedes that it certainly presents unique technical and operational challenges. “As each project has its own unique characteristics and complexities, no single methodology can be applied universally. However, drawing on Redpath’s extensive experience in deep and challenging mining environments, the company identified and evaluated the project-specific constraints and implemented tailored solutions to ensure the successful delivery of the project’s objectives.” Given that the Men and Material Shaft project is a highly specialised activity, it required critical shaft-sinking expertise.
