of the founders, Brian Kelly, who owns the training facility, promotes the activity as both a sport and as a practical skill. In the world of working farms and ranch- es, cutting horses help a rider separate a calf from a herd (or cut the calf from the herd). The horses are trained to assist the rider who will lasso the calf, dismount, and tie the calf quickly (with a special knot that can also be quickly untied). This enables farm or ranch workers to run in and do the vaccinating, ear-tagging, and, if necessary, castrating. A

smooth operation usually takes less than a minute, then the calf is released. In the rodeo sport of calf-roping, the same applies, except the cowboy or cowgirl ties the calf, waits the required amount of time during which the cutting horse’s movements hold the rope taut, then releases the calf. Various ECCHA competitions will be held throughout eastern Canada during the summer, and the final champions determined in Rus- sell.
