While the Cheatham County Imagination Library has undoubtedly managed to thrive since its inception nearly 20 years ago, board members are still diligently working toward a lofty goal set by the late John E Mayfield, a revered local philanthropist. Mayfield spent many years of his life trying to make the Cheatham community a better place for all who call it home, putting a great deal of his efforts into the local youth. By setting up an endowment, he hoped that one day the Cheatham County Imagination Library would be able to fully fund itself with the interest it collected alone. His goal is the driving force behind the board’s fundraising efforts which include applying for grants and actively collecting donations. “There is currently just over $11,000 in the endowment fund, but it is estimated that a total of $300,000 would be needed to fully fund the program on an indefinite basis,” Bell says. “We are just over $14,000 short in donations to fund the program for 2022. The donations are behind this year, understandably, due to COVID, but we hope to not only catch up, but also be able to put some of the donations collected toward the endowment fund to help secure John’s goal for the program.” The children of Cheatham County are just a small portion of the lives touched by Imagination Library’s worldwide reach, though. Over one million books are distributed per month through the successful and beneficial program, and in 2020, the organization celebrated the distribution of their 150 millionth book. “Before he passed away, my Daddy told me the Imagination Library was probably the most important thing I had ever done,” recalls Parton. “I can’t tell you how much that meant to me because I created the Imagination Library as a tribute to my Daddy. He was the smartest man I have ever known, but I know in my heart his inability to read probably kept him from fulfilling all of his dreams.” Jacqueline Kennedy once said, “There are many ways to enlarge your child’s world. Love of books is the best of all.” Because of Dolly Parton, Elke McLeroy, John E. Mayfield, and everyone in-between, the worlds of many Cheatham County children have already been made much bigger.
