observance, but the blessing of full fellowship with the Triune God for obedience. A much-needed emphasis for this day of confusion. 92 pages; cloth; Dunham Publishing Co.; Find lay, Ohio; no price listed. — Reviewed by Gerald L. Gooden. Romanism in the Light of Scripture By J. Dwight Pentecost Half-a-dozen of the major aspects of the Roman Catholic Church are explored. These include the church- state dual role, Mariolatry, the first pope, salvation by works or faith, and purgatory. The author points out that in God’s economy no single person ever held the office of priest and king simultaneously, except Melchizedek (and of course Christ). The king must come from the tribe of Judah and the priest from the tribe of Levi. Thus the pope seeks to bridge an impassable gulf in his presumption. One will find some interesting observations through out the volume. 127 pages; cloth; Moody Press, Chicago; $2.50. The Beatitudes of Jesus By William Fitch From the interpretative viewpoint that the Beatitudes “ are our Lord’s portrait of the Christian man . . . a call to and a test of vital Christian discipleship” (p. 3), Dr. Fitch dis cusses in a separate chapter each of the eight Beatitudes closing with an appeal to make the choice of blessed ness. The thrust of the Beatitudes is explained as “ first, three graces of a contrite soul, followed by God’s an swer in mercy, in righteousness, and in grace. Then . . . three graces of a commissioned soul, followed by the word’s answer in persecution and- re proach” (p. 125). The author weaves together with good effect the solid doctrines of Christian salvation and a warm devo tional appeal enhanced by numerous citations of poetry and hymns. His plea for the true Christian life of discipleship continually causes the reader to take stock of his own ex perience. Outside of the failure to note the primary interpretation and applica tion of Christ’s sermon to the people of His time in connection with the offer of the literal kingdom, this ap plication of the Beatitudes to the Christian is commended to all as both marking clearly the way and provid ing a glimpse of the blessedness of salvation in Christ. 132 pages; paper; Wm.
