DAVIS' NOTES ON MATTHEW by William Hersey Davis. 109 pages; paper; Broadman Press, Nashville; $1.50. For-a brief survey of the First Gospel, this is a fair exposition in the main. It is based on the central theme of the Kingdom of God as offered to the Jewish nation, publicly rejected, and Jesus' then turning away from the nation. In chapter 13 he sees the kingdom as being presented in a mystery form, the leaven "may represent the influence of evil on the working of the kingdom" (p. 55). THE EPISTLES TO THE GALATIANS AND THE EPHESIANS by Andrew W. Blackwood, Jr. 210 pages; cloth; Baker Book House, Grand Rapids; $3.50. THE EPISTLES TO TIMOTHY AND TITUS by Paul F. Barackman. 155 pages; cloth; Baker Book House, Grand Rapids; $2.95. Two of a 15-volume set called "Proclaiming the New Testa ment," and edited by Ralph G. Turnbull. Basic to the method is to provide a demonstration for using the Biblical material for preaching through the Bible. There is a good deal of brilliant writing in the book and rrtany quotations. THE GERMAN PHOENIX by Franklin H. LitteH. 226 pages; cloth; Doubleday & Co., New York; $3.95. A good deal has taken place in religious circles in Germany since the days of Hitler. Even under his oppression of the church lay movements took root, and today are active in the form of conferences (called Kirchentage) and academies. The story was suppressed for some time, but is now told in full by a man who spent some years in Germany both in study ana as Protestant Advisor to the U.S. High Commissioner for Ger many.
