Kilmarnock – On the waterfront

Marine development Pirtek Kilmarnock is proud to have

played its part in supporting the ongoing redevelopment of Stranraer waterfront, at the southern end of Loch Ryan, 95 miles south-west of Glasgow. Work that has already been completed on the project includes the building of a new harbour office and the installation of an Abi 25 tonne boat transporter. A Vermeer 30 tonne crane was also installed, allowing a new boatyard service to become operational in July 2016. The impressive transporter can lift a motor cruiser on top or a yacht in a suspended cradle. On an overcast day in February 2018, Pirtek was called upon to change a number of hoses on the equipment for Dumfries and Galloway council. Pirtek Kilmarnock MSST Andy Walker drove one hour and forty minutes to Stranraer and completed the complex job in just under three hours. Andy says, “Sadly, the weather conditions meant it was not as picturesque as it could have been, but working on a boat hoist was a new experience for me. The dimensions were quite tight and the hoses were to difficult to access.” Pirtek’s engineer was willing to go above and beyond to complete the job. “I had to cut down one of my own spanners in order to get at the hoses, but it was a successful task in the end.” Working in a harbour meant that there were environmental considerations, he says.

“In this case, it was even more important than normal to ensure there were no spillages, to avoid water pollution.”

Future plans for the Waterfront Development Project include the installation of a 330-boat marina.
