EXPLORING CLAY: INTERMEDIATE TO ADVANCED Let’s take your clay skills to the next level! Bill will throw, alter, and build familiar forms using wheel-throwing and hand-building techniques, and show you how to combine the two for more complex shapes! Demonstrations will begin promptly 15 minutes after the start of class, and range in complexity to take up approximately 30 minutes. Recommended for students who have taken at least one wheel throwing class, no previous hand-building experience is needed. Age: 15+ years Instructor: Bill Gravengood Wed 6:30-9:00 pm Jul 19-Aug 23 #8214 Fee: $180 Location: Moshier Art Center BEGINNING WHEEL Whether you are new to the pottery wheel, or it's been a while since you've taken a spin, Ryan McDonald will guide you through the ABCs of throwing. The focus of this class will be to home in on learning basic wheel throwing skills such as centering, forming cylinders, bowls, and attaching handles. Surface decoration techniques using underglazes, slip application, carving, and foundational elements of successful glaze application will also be covered. The last class session will be a potluck where we gather to show and discuss our work and future aspirations. Fee includes firing and glazes. WHEEL AND SURFACE TECHNIQUES: INTERMEDIATE TO ADVANCED Are there throwing or surface decorating techniques that you’d like to perfect or that you haven’t had a chance to try? In this 6-week class, four accomplished instructors will focus on a different technique. Demonstrations will include lids, altering wheel-thrown forms, building large with wheel-thrown sections, decorative slip techniques, handles and spouts and lastly glaze techniques. Pull your sleeves up and dive into this skill-building class. The fee includes glazes and firing. This class is recommended for students who have taken at least two previous wheel classes. Please note this class is 3 hours each week. CLASS FEES INCLUDE FIRING FEES. Please remember that MAC does not have the space to allow for production pottery. Extra firing fees will be assessed if kiln space is being overused. Students are responsible for purchasing their own clay and tools unless otherwise noted. Clay will be available for purchase at Moshier. OPEN STUDIO: Students enrolling in classes marked by pottery vase are encouraged to use MAC’s free open studio times. These times can be used while the class you are enrolled in is in session. Please see the most current student manual for open studio times. This manual will be available to you on the first day of class.
