NOT ONLY IS IT SAFE, IT’S ESSENTIAL Teeth Cleaning Is Critical During Pregnancy
There seem to be endless things to consider during pregnancy, but one often overlooked is dental health. The health of your gums and teeth should always be a priority, and pregnancy can make your oral care even more crucial than before. Surprisingly, your pregnancy can affect your teeth. Continuing your regular cleaning appointments is a great way to ensure your teeth, body, and baby are all healthy. Teeth Cleaning Is Safe During Pregnancy One thing many women worry about during their pregnancy is if dental procedures are safe for their baby. Our team is happy to tell you that teeth cleaning and other basic dental treatments are safe for those expecting! Tell your dentist if you’re pregnant so they can better help you and your specific needs! Pregnancy and Increased Oral Health Risks As we previously stated, your body undergoes widespread changes when pregnant. With increased hormones like estrogen and progesterone, your teeth can also become susceptible to various dental conditions. One of the most common issues pregnant women experience is gum inflammation, also known as gingivitis. 60%-75% of pregnant women have gingivitis. While your
hygienist can easily treat inflammation, it can lead to gum disease if ignored.
Gum disease, or periodontal disease, can cause gum infections and even affect the bones supporting your teeth. The weakened support can lead to loose teeth and bacteria in the bloodstream, eventually requiring tooth extraction. Another consideration is the possibility of pregnancy tumors, but we want to inform you that these lumps are not cancerous and often go away independently. Pregnancy tumors, called pyogenic granuloma, can form on the gums between teeth. These small lumps can be sensitive, red, and bleed easily. Although they usually disappear after delivery, you may need to have them removed by your dentist if they persist. Signs of Pregnancy-Related Dental Issues With these increased dental risks, it’s vital that you regularly visit your dentist to ensure your oral health is in the best shape possible for you and your baby. You may need to make an appointment sooner than later if you’re experiencing:
• Bumps or sores in your mouth • Any pain or toothaches • New spacing between teeth
Gum disease and other oral conditions can negatively impact your baby. Premature birth and low birth weights have both been linked to gum disease in mothers. The best way to prevent this is by undergoing routine teeth cleanings and practicing healthy dental maintenance at home. Create an Oral Care Plan With Your Dentist When you tell your dentist you’re expecting, they can share how you can ensure a healthy smile throughout your pregnancy. Along with regular teeth cleanings and checkups, your dentist will also recommend brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing daily. The Ustick Dental Team will always be thrilled to help mothers in every phase of their journey. We’re the experts in oral health, so be sure to let any expecting moms know we’re here to help!

A Ham-Fisted Attempt at Robbery
On the night of New Year’s Eve in 2014, a group of burglars experienced the fright of a lifetime. Expecting to rob a quiet home in Derby, England, the intruders instead came face to snout with Ludwig, a 240-pound potbellied pig. Abandoning all thoughts of crime once they spotted the pig, the burglars instantly fled the scene and ran for their lives.
Some fabricated web stories made Ludwig sound more dangerous than he is, so Maughan spoke to the Toronto Star to dispute any defamations against Ludwig’s kindness.
Intruders Flee From Ludwig the Pig
“He’s being painted as a vicious creature when he’s actually quite a sweet animal,” he explained. “He didn’t exactly bare his tusks and charge, I don’t think. I think he got absolutely, ‘Arrgh,’
and they just ran for it.” In fact, Maughan detailed that after a two-month separation during their move to England, the pig shed tears during their reunion. Adorable and affectionate, Ludwig would have probably become friends with the intruders in no time. Even if his “bark” is worse than his bite, Ludwig succeeded in keeping his owners safe while also protecting their home. This 240-pound potbellied pig continues to enjoy his comfortable home in Derby and is considered a town hero. Anyone looking for a guard dog may want to consider a hefty hog instead!
The “hero ham” had already become a popular figure in his town and was well-loved for his gentle demeanor. In fact, Michael Maughan, Ludwig’s owner, is confident that Ludwig wouldn’t have harmed the intruders, even if he does look quite intimidating. Local officers believe the robbers must have heard Ludwig’s Rottweiler-like “growl” and immediately hit the road, leaving the door wide open behind them. The story of this heroic potbellied pig became a sensation throughout Europe. Countless fans have applauded the Canadian- born hog for his loyalty to his owners. But the owners want to ensure people understand that Ludwig would never hurt anyone.
