THE TEXAS BASEBALL RANCH ® SUMMER PROGRAM … IT STARTS WITH MINDSET

Why are you here? What exactly are you trying to accomplish?

What are your specific goals for today, this morning, this afternoon, this week, this session, and this summer? When those “whys” are constantly painted in bright, bold colors, then — and only then — will the cutting-edge “hows” of the Ranch’s training have their maximum effect. This is exactly why best-selling performance expert Simon Sinek wrote a book titled “Start With Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action.” The elite performance community truly understands the incredible power of mindset. Take a lesson from Roger Federer and Navy SEAL training: The physical part of training pales in significance to the mental side of training. First, get your mind right. Only then will your body maximize its ability to work. The coaching staff has been working diligently to make this year’s Summer Program the best ever, and we are truly excited for June to arrive.

“Getting your mind right is the single most critical thing for maximizing your workouts.”

–Roger Federer

Federer has won 20 Grand Slam singles titles — the most in history for a male player — and has held the world No. 1 spot in the Association of Tennis Professionals rankings for a record total of 308 weeks, including 237 consecutive weeks.

At the Texas Baseball Ranch ® , we believe everything begins and ends with mindset.

We hope you’ll make plans to join us!

If you have the wrong mindset or are confused about the reason for your efforts, your productivity will certainly be limited. In other words, until you get your “why” worked out, the “how” — even a great “how” — just won’t get you very far. In my 25-plus years of coaching and training, I’ve never had anyone disagree with that logic, because it is unquestionably true. It all starts with our mind. When we are in quiet contemplation, away from the hustle and bustle of life, we all know this is true. But back in the real world, with all of its complexity, pretense, and subterfuge, we often forget our “why.” We get caught up in the activity. We become swallowed up by circumstances and comparisons. In our Summer Program, the Texas Baseball Ranch® makes absolutely certain each morning and afternoon that our athletes continually stay in touch with their “why.”

P.S. You can read more about the Summer Program and register at TexasBaseballRanch.com/events/tbr-summer-program. Early-bird savings end April 30!

GET THE MOST OUT OF SURGERY WITH ‘PREHABILITATION’

Though the research on prehabilitation is steadily expanding, displaying benefits for all kinds of conditions, the current data shows that prehabilitation works best for the following procedures:

While most physical therapists will not recommend surgery unless there is clearly no other avenue for a patient’s recovery, there are certainly a wide array of circumstances that warrant going under the knife. Following surgery, most patients should undergo a bout of rehabilitative physical therapy to steer the postoperative recovery process in a positive direction. However, recent research indicates that although rehabilitation is definitely important, it may not actually be enough to get the most out of a treatment. In addition to postoperative rehabilitation programs, many modern health care providers have begun recommending 4–8 weeks of exercise-based physical therapy before undergoing surgery. This pre-emptive therapy is sometimes called prehabilitation , and it can offer a host of benefits for surgical patients. These advantages include faster recovery times, fewer days spent in the hospital, lower incidence rates of surgical complications, less pain, higher activity levels, and general improved fitness following surgery. All these benefits converge to bring about a happier, healthier patient who is more likely to return to doing what they love without worry.

Joint replacement

Heart surgery

Correction of spinal disorders, particularly stenosis

Chemotherapy

In essence, prehabilitative patients are training for their surgery the same way a runner might train for a marathon. Considering the stress most surgeries put on the body, it only makes sense to adequately prepare. However, it’s important that any prehabilitative measures be carefully guided by a professional. The exercises must be rigorous enough to strengthen and prepare the patient in the short window before surgery, but it’s vital they don’t further injure or worsen the patient’s condition. If a therapist is able to maintain this delicate balance, they can motivate and guide their patient toward positive outcomes for years to come.

THE TRUTH ABOUT YEAR-ROUND BALL How to Balance Practice and Performance

!

meaning and purpose. I strongly believe that, to be successful over the long haul, each athlete must find their own way to create variety, freshness, meaning, and purpose. One of the most common missteps made by otherwise great parents is that they mistakenly believe the key to their athlete’s development is playing in as many games as possible over 4–5 years. In truth, playing in games rarely makes someone exceptional; only training

There’s “practice” and then there’s “performance.” They are definitely not one and the same.

Development is about deliberate, purposeful, and high-intensity practice. Development is also about physical, mental, and emotional balance. Performance involves the execution

of your skill set in a very specific setting. Burnout is created from stagnation and meaningless repetition.

THIS MONTH IN BASEBALL HISTORY Sidd Finch: The Greatest Player Who Never Lived Every fan gets excited about a promising young prospect signing to their team. These days, it’s easier than ever to Google stats and videos of players, no matter where they’re coming from. In 1985, however, access to information about up-and- comers was scarce. You basically had to read scouting reports and take them on blind faith. Writer George Plimpton and the folks at Sports Illustrated used fan excitement about prospects to play the greatest April Fools’ Day prank in baseball history. Plimpton created the character of Hayden Siddhartha “Sidd” Finch and reported that he had signed a deal with the New York Mets. Finch was raised in an orphanage, wore only one shoe, and could hit 168 mph on the radar gun. Despite the insane details of the story, many Mets fans believed the hype and wrote to Sports Illustrated for more information. The fans weren’t the only ones duped. The St. Petersburg Times sent a reporter to Queens in search of the mythical pitcher. Two general managers even called the MLB offices, worried about the prospect of their batters facing Finch. Had any of these folks taken the time to read the date on the issue of SI — April 1, 1985 — they might have figured out they were being tricked. Bottom line: Encourage your athlete to play as many sports as he can before he enters high school. He will probably have to narrow his choices once he hits high school age. My heartfelt advice is to not spend your entire year participating in organized sports. That doesn’t mean you can’t play catch or work on your baseball skills throughout the year. I highly encourage that, but you have to balance practice and performance. In my opinion, people get training and performing confused quite often. At the end of the day, it is the quality and quantity of your practice that will determine your level of performance. can do that. I recommend you view games as simply a quiz or test to evaluate your training. School wouldn’t be very productive if you took the same test every day. The same is true of baseball development.

I admit it is certainly possible to play baseball year-round and develop both physically and mentally. But I will tell you I’ve never witnessed any athlete younger than 16 successfully pull off playing games year-round. Personally, I’ve loved baseball my entire life. Human beings crave variety and freshness. More importantly, they also long for

FAMILY TIME IN THE GREAT OUTDOORS

HIKING A hike with family is an easy way to escape the hustle and bustle of city life. All a hike requires is a trail and a sense of adventure. The best part of hiking is that you can tailor the distance to fit your family’s needs. If you have children or grandkids who aren’t up for the challenge of an arduous daylong trek, there’s sure to be a shorter scenic trail. If nothing else, you can always turn around and backtrack the way you came.

Family adventures are a great way to grow closer and develop meaningful connections. But with lodging prices rising and the logistical nightmare that traveling with the entire family can be, many Americans are looking at a new option: ditching the beaches and resorts and heading to the great outdoors. Actually, we know this option isn’t new at all. Spending time outdoors with family may very well be one of the most time- honored traditions ever. CAMPING Lodgings and flights are expensive, so going on a family vacation can cost thousands of dollars — and that’s just for the basics! But camping only requires a tent, a fire, picnic food, and water. Rather than scarfing down fast food between flights and dealing with airport security, departure delays, and long flights, take a deep breath and roast marshmallows over the fire with the people you love.

FISHING Fishing is a great way to get out and do something relaxing yet challenging. It doesn’t require a lot of skill or investment. All it takes is the willingness to learn and the desire

to connect with nature. This is why fishing is the perfect activity for youngsters of all ages. So, what are you waiting for? Grab your rod and reel and head to the nearest lake or river.

While these are all great stand-alone options, together they form an amazing three- headed monster for your next family outing. By combining camping with a hike to a river or lake where you can go fishing, you are sure to create lasting memories with your family that will draw you closer together. Ditch the lines at the airport and the stress of travel. Unleash the possibilities of adventure in the great outdoors.
