I have dug deeper than ever to bring you my latest works driving myself beyond what I thought was possible, into an almost parallel world exposing my dreams and fears for the world to see. Over the last 18 months my perception of myself has changed, art has allowed me to finally express my inner emotional turmoil through dealing with subjects like isolation, aspirations and family life - areas which affect us all - and the struggle to bring these feelings to the canvas. concentration in getting accurate lines and circles in a piece – obsession if you like – but each gives my work a passion that’s difficult to pigeon hole but easy to relate to. The houses come from my need of stability offering a sanctuary of comfort, the hearts from my desire to feel part of a family and the special bond of love, the rings become my body depicting my struggle with life and my artwork. For the first time you see the real Peter Smith and with it comes a more surreal view on the world; it’s a journey and one that will take many years but will build into a crescendo of imagery that I hope will surprise you at every turn… Oil paint is thrown around in an aggressive manor in my studio, almost a direct opposite to my moody
SHADOWS WI THOUT A SUN
At school I never really fitted in, I was shy and was often picked on; a situation which led me to retreat more and more into a fictional world that I used to recreate in my schoolbooks and jotters. My artwork carried me through this tough time and allowed me to do something I never imagined possible. The people that were my bullies became friends as they realised I could do something they couldn’t – express myself.

When I start any painting I am full of enthusiasm, but during the painting process over many days you start to question the piece, almost turning it over in your head and beginning to doubt that it will work. It’s at this point that it changes and the mental picture you visualized the painting to be becomes an internal struggle to complete it to your satisfaction, thus starts the turmoil and the real painting starts to appear.
LEAN ON ME
We all feel a little vulnerable at times; if things are not going quite right, we all need a special person to carry us through. A shoulder to cry on, somebody who will listen, somebody to lean on. It's only after those times are passed, that you realise that special person made such a big difference; having a heart big enough for both of you.

It may be something that you take for granted everyday; it’s difficult to find, hard to hold on to and impossible to describe. It touches every person at some point but you cannot say when or how. HOME I S MORE THAN A HOUSE
From the dramatic landscape you witness a lonely figure picked out of the scene with a top-lit effect, there are no visible cues to its feelings just the anticipation of comfort and warmth when returning home after a period away. The figure is me and last year I spent quite a lot of time on the road, a house as a home was still important to me but I realised you could get that same sense of ‘home’ in many different ways. The company you keep, your partners love and even the things you take with you on your travels all add to this comforting feeling so no matter where I was I could always see home.
ONE STEP CLOSER
I pursued the lifestyle of an artist for many years, it was always my greatest passion but always seem the most difficult to obtain. I was lucky, but I also believed that if eventually I got the chance I would take that last step and grab it with both arms. Only you know your hearts desire, sometimes you can be so close but still out of reach. The heart has gone from this house but the path is lit and with a little effort maybe it can be restored and once again warmth will glow from its windows.
