EQUALITY, TECHNOLOGY, SUSTAINABILITY: WHAT DOES THE FUTURE LOOK LIKE FOR BUSINESS SCHOOLS? Nalisha Patel, Regional Director for GMAC in Europe, discusses the current state of graduate management education and what the future holds for the industry

How would you define ‘the new generation’ of business leaders'? We’ve learnt from the past two years that the pace of change moves quickly. It’s imperative that business leaders can navigate a very complex and constantly changing environment. According to our annual survey of global prospective students interested in graduate business degrees, 58% would consider leadership and change management a must-have in their ideal business programme. The ability to make decisions with lots of different sources of information will be paramount, but equally important will be the ability to anticipate the unintended consequences of decisions.
How important do you think issues such as sustainability and equity are in terms of management education? Businesses impact society, so it’s imperative to consider the consequences of what you’re doing. We’re also seeing expectations from students and young professionals. They’re asking, ‘does this employer care about the planet?’ Business Schools don’t just need to teach sustainability, they also have to be responsible leaders themselves. Given the climate emergency, do you think Business Schools have a role to play in helping communities to respond to natural disasters? In short, yes, they do. Business Schools have a responsibility to use their expertise to positively impact society, and many do this already. Whereas lots of student trips used to go to financial centres, many Schools have adapted these projects to helping communities in developing economies solve localised problems, and that’s great to see. But we should be doing more to harness the power of remote working to benefit communities.
