The World Is Seeing Double
Why Are More Twins Born Now? If you have twins in your family or went to school with a pair, you know just how fun and amazing they are — especially when they are identical. Back in the day, it was fairly rare to personally know twins, and if you were lucky enough to know them, it was fun to see what their similarities and differences were. However, today, according to statistics from the National Center for Health Statistics, the number of twins being born is skyrocketing. In fact, since 1980, the number of twin births has risen by 70%. But what is the reason behind this spike? There isn’t just one explanation — several factors have greatly contributed to the rise in the birth of multiples. A mother’s age plays a crucial role in the possibility of conceiving twins. As women age, they are more likely to release more than one egg during ovulation. For women under the age of 25, the possibility of having twins is only
roughly 2%. However, women aged 35–49 have a 5% chance of delivering twins. Because many women are waiting longer than earlier generations to get married and start families, they have children later in their lives, which increases the chance of having twins. Another reason behind the uptick in twin deliveries is the increase of fertility treatments in women. Many ovulation- stimulating medications, such as Clomid, Femara, and gonadotropins, can lead to more eggs being released at once, possibly resulting in multiple babies conceived at once. In vitro fertilization (IVF) also greatly increases your chances of conceiving more than one baby, as the eggs are fertilized outside of the body and returned to the uterus in hopes of successful implantation in the uterine wall.
The next time you see twins, don’t rub your eyes — you really are seeing double!
