APRIL 2025

Growing Together With You

The Headline Said It All:

It’s that season again, when our thoughts turn to baseball. I can never think about a Tampa Bay Rays game without remembering my daughter Alyssa, when she was just a little girl, getting bopped in the head by a Rays player.

ran out to get the bat from the batter before him. And suddenly, out of nowhere, he swings the bat and knocks her down! As I saw this unfold, the world around me went into slow motion. I jumped out of my seat and tried to hurdle the wall onto the field, but security wouldn’t let me. Finally, they brought Alyssa over to me. I sat her down and looked her over carefully. “What happened?” she asked. “Some guy took a random swing and bopped you on the head,” I told her. “How do you feel?” She put her hand to her head. She already had an egg blooming there. She wasn’t crying — she was a tough little girl — but she said, “It hurts really bad.” Then she looked up at me. “You’re going to make me go back out there and finish the game, aren’t you?”

You’re right: There’s a story here.

About 16 years ago, when Alyssa was only 8, we had an opportunity for her to be a bat girl during a spring training game between the Rays and the Boston Red Sox. We were so excited! I prepped her well. She had her little Boston Red Sox shirt and hat, and I even got her a helmet. Before the game, I coached her carefully: “Wait until the play is over. Don’t run onto the field when anyone is swinging the bat, okay?” Alyssa was doing a great job when, around the middle of the game, a Rays batter was standing in the on-deck circle and Alyssa

Of course, I had to go back home and tell her mom what happened — which wasn’t a good day for Carmen. “Didn’t I tell you to keep her safe?” my wife demanded. “We were doing everything right and this guy just randomly swung the bat around!” I told her. “There was no reason for it!” So, whenever I think of the boys of summer and spring training, I always think of that story. Alyssa really showed her true colors walking out on the field, and the crowd went crazy. She still keeps that bat in her room for protection, right by her bed. She knows from experience: If she whacks anybody with it, it’s going to hurt! Today, Alyssa is in medical school. She certainly learned how to be a tough girl. And one thing I’m sure of: I’ll never think of baseball the same way again.

“Yup, Honey, I am,” I replied.

Happy with our service? We’d love to hear from you! We are always honored when our clients and associates refer their friends, family,

“Okay, Dad, I’ll do it,” my little girl said. She knew her dad was not going to let her off easy, just because she got hit with a bat.

“Let’s just sit here for a couple of minutes and make sure you’re okay,” I said.

When she walked back onto the field, she got a standing ovation. “The little bat girl came back!” people were saying. “The little girl who got knocked out came back!” The crowd was roaring. A little intimidated, Alyssa just smiled and waved. The player who had hit her felt horrible. He brought her a bat and ball, which she still has.

A PRESCHOOLER’S FIRST TRIP TO THE GAME BIG LEAGUE MAGIC!

Our cover story this month tells of my daughter Alyssa’s best- known adventure in Major League Baseball — the day she got a standing ovation as a bat girl during spring training. Alyssa has no memory of an even earlier episode in her life as a baseball fan, when at age 4, she happily sampled just about every concession sold at Wrigley Field in Chicago. My wife and I had a chance to travel to Chicago for a seminar, and I said, “Honey, if we’re going all the way to Chicago during baseball season, I want to go to Wrigley Field and watch the Cubs play.” The century-old park has been open almost as long as Fenway Park in Boston, and its ivy-covered walls and old-school charm had long interested me. All that history was lost on little Alyssa. We had awakened before dawn to catch our flight and went straight to Wrigley Field from the airport. By the time we arrived, she was hungry — and she was dazzled. I bought her a little Cubs hat to wear, and she was having the time of her life! “Dellutri Law helped me at my lowest point. They were understanding and helpful. Whatever communication I had with them, they always got back to me very quickly. They made me not be afraid. 10/10 without a doubt.” –D.G. Testimonial Our Clients Say It Best

Marjorie and I were laughing and talking and having a blast talking to the fans nearby, and I was explaining to Alyssa how baseball works. Why do they wear hats? Why do they bat? Who is the umpire? I bought

her some peanuts and Cracker Jack, like the song says. I also bought her some popcorn, candy, and a hot dog — she had it all!

By the time the first pitch was thrown, Alyssa was fast asleep on my shoulder. She didn’t see one single play. And the best part, we snagged a foul ball and she didn’t even notice! It was a grounder that bounced up the wall and right into my hands! Alyssa had scored her first foul at a major league game and she didn’t even know it. She was out cold! Nevertheless, it was a proud Daddy moment. To this day, the baseball season never rolls around without my thinking of these two events!

BEWARE OF THE DISTRACTED DRIVER Be Careful! If you’re driving and spot someone glued to their phone instead of the road, I have some legal advice for you: Get away from them, fast! April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month — a good time to be careful out there! Steer clear of drivers texting, talking on their phones, applying makeup, eating lunch, fiddling with their car’s touchscreen, talking to their kids in the back seat — or just spacing out. Anticipate that these drivers will do something stupid, and you’ll be right 99% of the time. The problem is getting worse as cellphones occupy more of our time, and our cars come loaded with more high-tech navigation, audio, and climate control tools. The incidence of distracted driving rose 10% between 2022 and 2023, according to insurance industry data compiled by LexisNexis Risk Solutions. And if you are the one behind the wheel, be aware that texting or talking on a cellphone while driving are among the most dangerous habits of all. If you are traveling only 30 mph and look at your phone for just one second, your vehicle travels 44 feet — far enough to swerve off the road or hit a pedestrian, animal, or another vehicle. Distracted driving isn’t limited to cellphones. It occurs anytime you take your eyes off the road, hands off the wheel, or mind off the important task of driving. Eating, drinking, or talking to passengers can all be dangerous, too. So, if you are behind the wheel, slow down and watch for the unexpected! Always, always pay attention to the road ahead of you! If you get a call you can’t ignore, pull over first and park safely before taking it. And if you ever get hit by one of these distracted, text-happy knuckleheads, call us! We will gladly schedule a free case evaluation to help you gain any compensation you deserve.

1 Alyssa Draws a Standing O as a Major League Bat Girl 2 Introducing a 4-Year-Old to Major League Magic! Our Clients Say It Best Follow Us on Social Media! 3 During Distracted Driving Awareness Month, Be Mindful of Safety Ginger Veggie Stir Fry 4 When Your Diary Becomes Evidence

Many of us have fond memories of writing in diaries or journals throughout our youth. We would share our thoughts and feelings in a book we would keep hidden from friends, family members, and others. It was our sanctuary where we could be ourselves without worrying about judgment or embarrassment. You may even remember the feeling of rage or hopelessness when you spotted your brother or sister holding your diary. Thankfully, there usually wasn’t anything too incriminating in our teenage diaries, and some of us have continued the practice well into adulthood. However, a recent news story proves we should be cautious about the information we share in our private journals. Last year, a Minnesota woman was arrested for auto theft. While investigating the incident and looking into Vanessa Guerra, a suspect in the case, a law enforcement officer allegedly found her diary. He flipped through the pages, looking for any information that would catch his eye, when he stumbled upon an entry from Aug. 12, the same day a 2004 Ford Freestar van was stolen and resold at an auto salvage business. “Totally stole a car today! Something I never thought of doing,” Guerra allegedly wrote in her diary. “Super-freaking out about it.” Guerra was charged with receiving stolen property and theft, although she claims she didn’t know the vehicle was stolen. However, workers at the auto salvage business informed law enforcement they recognized Guerra as the seller of the stolen vehicle. Most people will probably not blab to others about crimes they have committed, especially if they are currently unsolved. This case reminds us to be just as cautious about what we write in private journals. While your diary may be your safe place to share your innermost thoughts and feelings, your entries could come back to haunt you if you’re involved in a criminal case, especially if you blatantly admit to the crime.
