A PRESCHOOLER’S FIRST TRIP TO THE GAME BIG LEAGUE MAGIC!
Our cover story this month tells of my daughter Alyssa’s best- known adventure in Major League Baseball — the day she got a standing ovation as a bat girl during spring training. Alyssa has no memory of an even earlier episode in her life as a baseball fan, when at age 4, she happily sampled just about every concession sold at Wrigley Field in Chicago. My wife and I had a chance to travel to Chicago for a seminar, and I said, “Honey, if we’re going all the way to Chicago during baseball season, I want to go to Wrigley Field and watch the Cubs play.” The century-old park has been open almost as long as Fenway Park in Boston, and its ivy-covered walls and old-school charm had long interested me. All that history was lost on little Alyssa. We had awakened before dawn to catch our flight and went straight to Wrigley Field from the airport. By the time we arrived, she was hungry — and she was dazzled. I bought her a little Cubs hat to wear, and she was having the time of her life! “Dellutri Law helped me at my lowest point. Marjorie and I were laughing and talking and having a blast talking to the fans nearby, and I was explaining to Alyssa how baseball works. Why do they wear hats? Why do they bat? Who is the umpire? I bought
her some peanuts and Cracker Jack, like the song says. I also bought her some popcorn, candy, and a hot dog — she had it all!
By the time the first pitch was thrown, Alyssa was fast asleep on my shoulder. She didn’t see one single play. And the best part, we snagged a foul ball and she didn’t even notice! It was a grounder that bounced up the wall and right into my hands! Alyssa had scored her first foul at a major league game and she didn’t even know it. She was out cold! Nevertheless, it was a proud Daddy moment. To this day, the baseball season never rolls around without my thinking of these two events!
