BEWARE OF THE DISTRACTED DRIVER Be Careful! If you’re driving and spot someone glued to their phone instead of the road, I have some legal advice for you: Get away from them, fast! April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month — a good time to be careful out there! Steer clear of drivers texting, talking on their phones, applying makeup, eating lunch, fiddling with their car’s touchscreen, talking to their kids in the back seat — or just spacing out. Anticipate that these drivers will do something stupid, and you’ll be right 99% of the time. The problem is getting worse as cellphones occupy more of our time, and our cars come loaded with more high-tech navigation, audio, and climate control tools. The incidence of distracted driving rose 10% between 2022 and 2023, according to insurance industry data compiled by LexisNexis Risk Solutions. And if you are the one behind the wheel, be aware that texting or talking on a cellphone while driving are among the most dangerous habits of all. If you are traveling only 30 mph and look at your phone for just one second, your vehicle travels 44 feet — far enough to swerve off the road or hit a pedestrian, animal, or another vehicle. Distracted driving isn’t limited to cellphones. It occurs anytime you take your eyes off the road, hands off the wheel, or mind off the important task of driving. Eating, drinking, or talking to passengers can all be dangerous, too. So, if you are behind the wheel, slow down and watch for the unexpected! Always, always pay attention to the road ahead of you! If you get a call you can’t ignore, pull over first and park safely before taking it. And if you ever get hit by one of these distracted, text-happy knuckleheads, call us! We will gladly schedule a free case evaluation to help you gain any compensation you deserve.
