Descending nearly 70 feet into the ground at the World Trade Center site, the mu- seum was designed to be the global focal point for present- ing and preserving the history and memories of the tragic events of September 11, 2011, documenting the impact of the attacks, while exploring their enduring significance. The subterranean museum comprises 110,000 s/f of publi- cally accessible space and was designed to convey the enor- mity of the events it memori- alizes. Beneath a ground-level plaza begins a gently descend- ing procession (dubbed “the Ribbon”) that guides visitors from the plaza to the bedrock level where the cut columns of the World Trade Center towers still remain. The gradual de- scent provides time for visitors to reconnect with the site, as its iconic features are progres- sively disclosed. The passage is lined with a variety of artifacts as well as remains of the tower. The lower level of the muse- um contains foundations of the World Trade Center, including the original retaining wall that was built to withstand the lateral forces of landfill and river. n
