A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 10

It has been wonderful to welcome back Year 10 to a fresh new term at Waldegrave. Hopefully they feel refreshed and well rested after the holidays.

As we start a new year, this is a good opportunity for students to replenish their stationary kits, ensuring that they have everything that they need for lessons. Pencils, highlighters, black/blue pen, glue sticks and scissors are some of the most essential items. Last term, tutor groups put forward names of students that were going to complete in the Year 10 Waldegrave bake off. This is always a wonderful event, and it is great to have students from every form getting involved. This year students are being asked to make delicious and beautifully decorated cupcakes. I look forward to tasting and judging all of these very soon!

Congratulations to 10FGR for getting the most epraise points this week. Well done! A great start to the new term. Well done also to Camila K, 10STH for achieving a high Merit for her Grade 4 Trinity Singing class exam.

Students are reminded of the need to wear a lanyard at all times during the school day. If any have been mislaid new ones can be purchased via Parent Pay. Lastly, a reminder to all that Waldegrave Sports and Clubs will start next week - please see the full list of activities for the Spring Term on the website here. It would be great to see Year 10 keeping active and taking part or trying something new!

Have a good week!

MRS PORTEOUS, HEAD OF YEAR 10

BOOK OF THE MONTH

‘The Hunger Games’ by Suzanne Collins

In a dystopian future, the capital holds annual games where one boy and one girl (aged 12-18) from each of the 12 districts is chosen to fight to the death in an arena. The games are televised and shown across the country as a reminder to the labourers in the district that they are powerless against the capital. When Katniss’ sister has her name called during the annual reaping, Katniss volunteers to take her place as a daring act of sacrifice. The contrast between the glamour of the capital and the harsh conditions of the districts is an eye opening com- mentary on the dangers of political corruption and capitalism.
