Off-peak season business events a positive for hospitality sector A total of 23 business events are scheduled for Tasmania during August and September providing an estimated economic boost of $15.1 million to the hospitality industry during the off-peak tourist season. Business events and conferences will be held in Hobart, Launceston, on the east coast and in the northwest with more than 5000 delegates filling up 17,580 hotel room nights across both months. Two particularly busy periods will see 1500 delegates attend six events from September 3-9 and 1400 delegates attend five events from September 24-30. Business Events Tasmania CEO Marnie Craig said the wide variety of meetings and events were often directly linked to the state’s main professional sectors. “Business events and conferences in Tasmania are often connected to some of the state’s key areas including Antarctic and Southern Ocean research,” she said. “Tasmania’s direct geographical and professional links to the Southern Ocean and Antarctic regions make it the ideal location to host these globally significant conferences.” Ms Craig said delegates attending Tasmanian business events during September and August were visiting from across the world and represented a range of industries including family law, aeromedicine, public health, child psychiatry and dentistry. “These events provide opportunities for Tasmania to be recognised on the world stage as a leader in global collaboration and promote the state’s world class institutions,” she said. Business events and conferences are integral to the success of Tasmania’s visitor economy, bringing in much needed business to local hotels, restaurants, wineries and bars outside of the peak tourism periods. Also, many of the delegates visiting Tasmania will often return with their families which provides a further economic boost.
