It has been lovely to welcome students back to school after the half term break. I would like to apologise for the delay returning after we were forced to close the school on Tuesday due to issues with the water supply.
I would like to thank all the parents and carers who attended the Year 9 Options Information Evening before half term. I hope that this was useful and helped you to discuss GCSE choices and future career aspirations with your child over half term. Our Year 11 and Year 13 students are now coming to the end of their courses. This week Year 13 have been completing their final mocks before their A level examinations in the summer. Year 11 students have also been involved in assessments in Music and Food Technology and our Art students have submitted their coursework portfolios for assessment. On Tuesday our Year 10 Textile students visited the V&A to see the sold out Chanel exhibition. Chanel is one of the set designers at GCSE so it was a great opportunity for the students to see the fabulous collection. I am looking forward to seeing many parents at tonight’s PTA Quiz, not only to raise funds for the school but also to have the opportunity to come together as a community. We are also reaching out to parents who may be able to support either a Sixth Form Careers event or our Silent Auction. Please see the end of the bulletin for more information.

HEALTH AND WELLBEING
The Charlie Waller Trust have just launched their new series of free mental health webinars, starting on Monday 4 March. They are presented by expert mental health trainers from CWT and guest speakers who come from a wide range of professions and expertise. The webinars explore practical, evidence-based information and strategies. Topics include: Helping your child understand their emotions and practical strategies to help, Spotting signs that new students are struggling settling in and how to support, Self harm - spotting the signs and providing support, Knowing when a friends struggling and understanding how to help, Spotting signs that a young person is struggling with their mental health. A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 7
After a later than planned start, it has been nice to welcome back our Year 7 students to the new half term. Spring feels like it is almost sprung and it is nice for us all to have lighter mornings and evenings. I hope that everybody is refreshed after the break. Whilst on the subject of refreshing, I ask that parents and carers perform a stationery check as at this time of year those gleaming new pencil cases that were bulging with equipment in September are now likely to be somewhat depleted. On top of the usual pens, pencils and ruler, please ensure that your child has a purple pen (used for self-assessment of classwork) and a whiteboard pen (used for quick assessments of learning in the lesson). Well done to our Year 7 Touch Rugby team for their brilliant success at their first ever tournament. The team showed great strength and determination and their hard work paid off as they were crowned the winners! Wednesday saw the first Parents Consultation Meeting for Year 7 students and parents. I hope that you found the teachers’ feedback useful. There will be further progress data shared with parents/carers in April. Well done to 7EST, 7PIR and 7FLE who top the leaderboard in the Year 7 House Point chart. Congratulations to Lydia K (7EST) who has written a script for a radio play which is to be made by the Complicite theatre company using a team of actors. This is a tremendous achievement! As you will be aware I frequently flag to parents and carers the hazards of allowing Year 7 students to use social media platforms. I would like to reiterate the message that went out before half term that all of the commonly used social media/messaging platforms have a minimum age requirement beyond the age of many of our students. The minimum age for SnapChat, Instagram and TikTok is 13 years old. The minimum age for WhatsApp is 16 years old. Our younger students do not all have the maturity to recognise situations that they should avoid and this may lead to them becoming either a victim or a perpetrator of cyberbullying. The Girl of Ink and Stars by Kiran Millwood Hargrave
This book delves into the story of Isabella, who lives on an island filled with mythical legends and secrets. When a mysterious disappearance of a girl on the Island happens it leaves everyone with questions. The book follows Isabella on her quest of finding the missing girl on the island and solving the strange mysteries of the unknown. Meanwhile, discovering her past and the vibrant history of her ancestors. I like how fast paced and exciting the book is, while also allowing the reader to feel intrigued.

APPRENTICESHIP FOCUS EVENT - SUPPORT NEEDED
As part of our Sixth Form Careers Insight, we have organised an Apprenticeship Focus Event for our Year 12 students on Tuesday 30 April. This event will help our students explore options and gain insights into apprenticeship pathways into different industries.
To make this event successful we are looking for companies who run apprenticeship schemes who can join us for the event and talk to students informally in small groups.
If you are able to offer any support, please contact us at sixthform@waldegravesch.org and we will follow up with more detailed information.
UPCOMING PTA EVENTS
A little help goes a long way … The next events to raise vital funds for the school will be our Silent Auction at the end of March. We really need your help in making this event happen. Please do take a moment to look at the requests on the below link and if you could sign up for the event, it would really make a difference to the success of raising vital funds for the school which directly benefits the students.
