spokesman and an assistant coach for Canada’s national sledge hockey team. He came on board when he volunteered to serve as a referee for a sledge hockey demo game during the 1999 Winterlude festivities in Ottawa. “We had a great time,” he said. Gallant jumped at the chance to stay involved in the sledge hockey movement when he was invited to help referee at the 2000 World Sledge Hockey Championships and later the 2004 Paralympics. Now, besides his assistant coaching duties, he also spends his time with scouting for the Sledgehammers. "On our team (Ottawa) we have a couple players with potential to be national level." The success, despite the weather, of events like Friday the 13 th in Rockland give him hope that sledge hockey is the new growing winter sport in Canada for both players and fans. “We would do another game in Rockland for sure, easy,” he said.
about the new hockey league’s future and Gallant noted that the past attention sledge hockey has received in Canada during the past decade with Canada’s gold-medal triumph in Torino at the 2006 Paralympics. “We’ve seen a big increase in participa- tion,” Gallant said. “The depth of the players and the opportunities for players to get involved now in the sport has improved the game all around. Ten years ago there weren’t enough players to put together enough teams to create a league at this level.” Recent changes in the recruiting policy for the NSHL now allows members of the Team Canada and Team USA paralympic squads to play for the member clubs. The challenge now is for the league to parcel out these high-level skill players among the member clubs in a way that is fair for all and will not result in “top heavy” rosters for any franchise and also ensure that the up-and-coming members of the teams also get their share of ice time. Gallant himself doubles both as a league
NSHL, Sledge Hockey Eastern Ontario, lo- cal minor hockey, and the Prescott-Russell chapter of the Make a Wish Foundation. Gallant expressed satisfaction with the results of the night even when the Friday the 13 th curse seemed dead set on running interference with a mid-January snow storm that blanketed Eastern Ontario and delayed the start of the game because the Montréal team was late getting in to town. “We had close to 500 people that night, which is pretty good, considering the weather,” said Gallant. The National Hockey League had just four teams when it was born in 1917 but now numbers dozens and kids all over the world who can skate and move a puck dream of one day becoming an NHL star. By comparison the NSHL is starting out with six teams during its first official start- up season, with Windsor and Barrie joining the original group comprising Ottawa, Montréal, Toronto, and Buffalo. The expansion is cause for optimism
They can move almost as fast on the ice as their counterparts in the NHL and they can rocket the puck like a guided missile into the net like Gretzky. Some day the National Sledge Hockey League could be just as big and just as famous but right now the focus is being just for fun. Rockland hockey fans roared from the bleachers at the Canadian International Hockey Academy Arena (CIHA) last Friday night to cheer on the Ottawa Sledgehammers and the visiting Montréal Transat as the two NSHL teams slid and shot their way around the rink in an hour- long battle that finished with a 3-2 squeaker for the Transat on a last-minute goal. “It’s always been tight games,” said Mark Gallant, NSHL spokesman, regarding the Ottawa-Montréal rivalry in the league schedule this past season. The game was a combined promotional event for the league and a fundraiser for the
