QUALIFICATIONS EXPLAINED Entry Level These are foundational courses that focus on the functional skills and life skills you’ll need to start your educational journey, preparing you for future learning. Level 1 Level 1 courses are a first step into an industry or an area of study. They’ll equip you with the key skills and learning behaviours needed to successfully progress onto a level 2 course, or to a level 2 Apprenticeship. They will also equip you with some of the basics you’ll need to look for work experience and volunteering opportunities in the industry you’re interested in. Equivalent to • GCSE grades 1-3 (D-G) • Level 1 NVQ, BTEC Introductory, Functional Skills Level 1 Progression • Level 2 courses such as awards and certificates • Level 2 Apprenticeships • Work experience or volunteering opportunities
Level 2 Level 2 courses are designed to develop your skills, knowledge and behaviours within a particular industry or career path. They start to specialise in key areas of the industry you’re interested in, but are still broad enough to allow you to progress on to a wide range of courses at higher levels. From a level 2 course, you’ll be able to successfully progress onto a level 3 course, to a level 3 Apprenticeship, or to start work in an entry level job in the industry you’re interested in.

Progression • Level 3 courses such as awards and certificates • Level 3 Apprenticeships • Entry level job opportunities Level 3 Level 3 courses offer more specialised, advanced learning, giving you the skills, knowledge and behaviours needed to progress to university, a Higher Apprenticeship, or directly into skilled employment within the industry you’re interested in.

Progression • Higher and Degree Apprenticeships (level 4 and above) • Foundation Degrees (level 5) • Bachelor Degrees (level 5/6) • Professional qualifications at level 4 and above • Skilled employment opportunities
