Words Megan Ellaby, Style Blogger

Hey, Megan Ellaby here to welcome you to the much-anticipated third issue of the Carnaby Magazine. As a style blogger from Manchester, I love nothing more than a regular trip down to London and I bet you can guess where I always head to first… Carnaby is my favourite part of London for so many reasons. From its rich musical heritage to street after street of some of my favourite international flagships, cult labels and independent brands, Carnaby is the place to find some of the best brands in the business for spring/ summer ‘18, with one-off concepts (think M.C. Overalls and The Ragged Priest ) next door to global firsts – here’s looking at you, Too Faced . This season, it’s all about pastels and ice-cream shades; think pistachio, lemon sorbet, palma-violet and rose. To get your sugar hit, head to Lazy Oaf in the Newburgh Quarter or Skinnydip and Brandy Melville on Foubert’s Place for all things sweet. Be sure to head to page 17 for tons of summer styling inspiration. If it’s denim you’re after, think dark, selvedge styles in a cleaned-up and polished way. Head to True Religion and Levi’s Vintage Clothing for a pair of keep-forever jeans. For evening wear, The Kooples is a personal favourite of mine for that stand-out rock ‘n’ roll look. Guys, a visit to Ben Sherman and Paul Smith will answer all your tailoring needs; find out where Paul McCartney, Heath Ledger and Roger Moore have had their suits crafted for them in Carnaby on page 28. Beauty babes, Carnaby is your one-stop portal for getting that all-important summer glow, with the likes of Urban Decay , Pixi and Benefit on hand to get you feeling fabulous. Become master of the coolest winged white eye liner on page 36 – perfect for festival season and beyond.

Enjoy! Megan x

Recipe for Success

Restaurateur Stevie Parle has done it again. This time the chef supreme has put pasta on the map, right in the heart of Carnaby.

Interview Tom Bottomley

Stevie Parle

Putting a big ‘P’ in pasta magnifica is Stevie Parle, with his new restaurant dedicated to all things stringy, tubular, twirly and ultimately super-tasty at Pastaio , 19 Ganton Street. Be warned, you can’t book. But, if you can’t get a table right away, go for a quick drink at the Blue Posts on the corner and await a text for your table to be ready and waiting for a delicious experience. Parle, owner of the Dock Kitchen, Rotorino, Palatino and Craft London, has really surpassed himself this time. It’s pasta heaven, perfectly accented by a skilfully designed interior from the award-winning Tom Dixon Design Research Studio. This is pasta made by hand, and the open-plan kitchen means you can see all the wonderfully fresh British produce going into your dish of the day. Parle says: “It’s real people making proper food from scratch. We’re focused on fresh pasta made in-house every day.” The restaurant looks fresh, fun and very cool, with a mural on the wall from graphic artist Rob Lowe aka Supermundane. But, overall, Pastaio is all about quality, at a super-affordable price.

The sharing tables create a sociable atmosphere along with a great playlist, with the music turned up to add to the ambience. “It’s part of your night out, and a very contemporary experience,” comments Parle. “This is definitely not pasta pastiche!” The wild mushrooms with tagliatelle are what’s really hitting the mark with diners right now, outselling everything else. “I’m quite surprised,” says Parle. “It turns out people really love mushrooms!” The stuffed pasta with grouse, rabbit and pork agnoli is another firm favourite. “We’re geared up to how I think people like to eat in London, with punchy flavours.” So why did Parle choose Carnaby for his latest taste- testing venture? “I really like this part of London for loads of reasons, including the rich heritage. There’s so many great restaurants that have opened in the area, like Darjeeling Express, The Good Egg and Breddos Tacos - all fantastic places. It’s a real eating destination, and it’s always nice to have good neighbours, as we all know.” Needless to say, everyone else is saying the same thing about Pastaio.

Spaghetti with courgettes, yellow tomatoes and crab

Spaghetti with courgettes, yellow tomatoes and crab

Serves 4 Time to cook 15-20 minutes

Method : Put the pasta on to cook in a large pan of well-salted water. Finely chop the garlic and chilli, quarter the tomatoes. Thinly slice or spiralise the courgettes into strips. Heat a large, wide frying pan. Add a tablespoon of cooking olive oil, add the garlic and chilli followed by the fennel seeds, courgettes and tomatoes. Add the crab and remove from the heat. When the pasta is cooked but still al dente, add to the frying pan with a little of the cooking water. Finish with good olive oil, parsley and lemon, and add an extra sprinkle of dried chilli on the plate if that helps.

Ingredients : 400g spaghetti 1 ‘dressed’ crab 1 tbsp olive oil 1 garlic clove

1 tsp chopped fresh chilli 1 tsp crushed fennel seeds juice of a lemon 4 tbsp good olive oil 10 yellow cherry tomatoes 2 courgettes a small bunch of finely chopped parsley a pinch of dried chilli

Yes, Chef

We unlock the secrets of your favourite Carnaby dishes and the chefs behind them.

Words Tom Bottomley

Breddos Tacos Nud Dudhia

What’s your favourite dish on the menu at Breddos Tacos for this spring? We do a special dish called Pulpo Asado, which is a whole cooked octopus and exclusive to our Carnaby restaurant. We use an array of different oils and spices, and it’s got a delicate flavour while also being quite meaty. What would you say are your top seasonal ingredients? We use a lot of wild garlic. It’s one of my favourite ingredients to work with and we even pickle it. We also have Seville oranges coming into season which are wonderfully tart and go with a lot of marinades we use for Mexican cookery. What makes the restaurant unique? The restaurant has an incredible vibe, and there’s a margarita and mezcal bar downstairs which is the only one in central London. It’s also the type of place you can come in and have a beer and tacos for a light snack, or an all-out meal with wine. What’s your favourite place to eat in the Carnaby area after your shift? The place I go to most at the moment is Pizza Pilgrims. Otherwise I like Pastaio, the new pasta place on Ganton Street.

Breddos Tacos, 26 Kingly Street

Jinjuu Andrew Hales

What’s your favourite dish on the menu at Jinjuu for this spring? Spring is one of my favourite times of year to cook as there’s loads of great ingredients to use. I like to incorporate English asparagus and wild garlic into a traditional Korean bibimbap. It’s a fantastic healthy dish which incorporates six different vegetables. What would you say are your top seasonal ingredients? English asparagus, samphire and English strawberries. What makes the restaurant unique? We’re an independent restaurant group putting Korean food on the map. Great cocktails, music and design give us a unique dining experience. We also have DJs in at the weekend and you’re guaranteed a cracking atmosphere in the bar. What’s your favourite place to eat in the Carnaby area after your shift? Dishoom is a cool place with good food and drink at affordable prices.

Jinjuu, 15 Kingly Street

8

Le Bab Manu Canales

What’s your favourite dish on the menu at Le Bab for this spring? It would have to be the Paneer Kebab, a vegetarian kebab with Indian cheese. For meat lovers, I’d have to say either the Lamb Adana, where the meat is skewer-grilled on a barbecue, or the Pork Shawarma. What would you say are your top seasonal ingredients? We use a wide range of vegetables that we pickle for every kebab. For spring I would go for fennel and celery. What makes the restaurant unique? We make everything in-house, from the bread to all the sauces, and we only use prime-quality ingredients. We are a very organic kitchen, and for just £10 you can get something special and very tasty. What’s your favourite place to eat in the Carnaby area after your shift? I go to Darjeeling Express. They have a really good aubergine dish, and on Sundays they do an Indian roast biriyani. It’s just really good food.

Le Bab, Second Floor, Kingly Court

The Good Egg Joel Braham

What’s your favourite dish on the menu at The Good Egg for this spring? Shakshuka is a traditional Israeli and North African breakfast or brunch dish, and that’s a favourite. It’s eggs braised in a spicy tomato sauce served with lots of bread, and we serve it with our preserved lemon yoghurt on top. It’s a great dish at any time of day. What would you say are your top seasonal ingredients? We’re really looking forward to wild garlic this season. It goes fantastically with scrambled eggs, and makes an amazing bright green oil we use to make aioli, then serve with our house flatbreads. What makes the restaurant unique? I don’t think there’s anything else like us in central London. We combine Israeli and traditional Jewish New York deli-style food. We source all our produce very carefully, and our eggs have a rich yolk and lots of flavour. It’s also a unique dining experience, with a fantastic interior inspired by 1950s Tel Aviv. What’s your favourite place to eat in the Carnaby area after your shift? I love the new pasta restaurant, Pastaio on Ganton Street. That would be my top late-night place to head for a great bowl of pasta. Darjeeling Express is also very good.

Pedal to the Metal

Making rock ‘n’ roll jewellery since 1972, The Great Frog counts some of the biggest names in the music business amongst its many fans. Owner and designer Reino Lehtonen-Riley lets us in.

of the building, which was actually built in 1670 and is Grade II listed. We still manufacture our jewellery in the basement of the shop and, with the refurbishment, you will actually be able to see the jewellery being made. What are the forever bestsellers in the shop? We’ve got this one silver rose ring that we’ve been selling for about 20 years, and it’s always been popular, but sales of it have suddenly gone crazy, since Harry Styles bought one. We’ve also got a skull Mickey Mouse ring that Lady Gaga bought and wore in a video, and sales of that went mental. My dad, Paterson Riley, started it in 1972, and is now retired. I took over about 15 years ago. My dad taught me how to make jewellery. He always said the only reason to have children was to have a cheap workforce! If there were one person you could get to wear your jewellery who would it be? The weird thing is, practically everyone I’d love to wear our jewellery has. Mick Jagger would be up there, because he’s super cool, but he’s Who founded The Great Frog?

already had some pieces from us. I’d love to make a custom piece for him though. If we’re talking in the realms of fantasy, then I would have to say Jimi Hendrix if he was still alive. That would have been amazing. What other famous faces have bought from The Great Frog? We’ve sold jewellery to everyone from Keith Richards to Jay-Z, and Tom Hardy recently bought a load from us. The Jay-Z piece was a bespoke 18-carat gold piece with loads of diamonds. That was a £40,000 piece! Kate Moss also came in recently and spent a load of money. She was great fun and bought champagne for the staff. What does it mean to you for The Great Frog to be situated in the Newburgh Quarter? It’s so important for us. I’ve got a real historical tie to the place, because my dad started here. We’ve been here for so long, and for me it’s now better than it has ever been. Carnaby on the whole has some really interesting shops, and great places to eat such as Polpo on Beak Street, and Shoryu in Kingly Court does really good ramen.

Interview Tom Bottomley

What’s your favourite piece of jewellery at the moment? I’m doing this signet ring with a black enamelled shield which has a small skull in the centre. It’s a reissue of one we did about 10 years ago. It’s quite iconic. Josh Homme from Queens of the Stone Age wore it in loads of photo shoots, and Alex Turner from the Arctic Monkeys bought one.

with Vans, and we’re launching our own clothing collection. It’s mainly going to be leather pieces, rock star and biker style. I collect motorbikes and and I love to ride, so it’s a range of clothing that fits in with that lifestyle, but with more of a rock edge to it. What can you tell us about the upcoming store refurbishment? We’re fully restoring the whole building, stripping it right back to its original features, and we’re turning it in to what will be like a working museum/shop. What we are going to show is the originality have loads of vintage Harleys and Triumphs,

What are the exciting new additions to your design

offer for this season? We’ve got new Iron

Maiden, Judas Priest and Motörhead collaboration jewellery pieces coming out. We’re also doing a collaboration shoe

Sneakers: Is it a Woman’s Game?

Words Aneesha Dewshi, Big Eyes Little Soles

For as long as I can remember, I’ve always loved sneakers. My first years at primary school were spent stomping around the playground in basketball sneakers; they were big, bold, brash and for boys (or so it said on the label). Back then, a lot of the popular styles I was drawn to were in the boys department. All that was accessible for girls came in 50 shades of pink and that just didn’t cut it for me!

Back then, Carnaby Street was a regular shopping destination for many eager sneakerheads as it hosted a number of exciting footwear retailers such as PUMA , Vans and size? , which at the time had just opened its flagship store. Looking at Carnaby now, you can see the rise of footwear brands within the area, with the addition of Onitsuka Tiger , Superga , adidas Originals and OFFICE all offering and serving a diverse range of customers. All this news of expansion and inclusiveness of women within the sneaker market has led to an exciting upsurge of female-only collaborations and dual-gendered collections in unisex sizes due to the rise in demand. size? was also one of the first sneaker retailers to offer dedicated areas within its stores to women’s footwear and apparel and has since doubled the size of its flagship store in Carnaby. For any first-time buyers who would like to get into sneakers, I would advise reading and researching first. Start with a classic silhouette such as the Superga ‘2750’ or the adidas Original ‘Superstars’. For those of you who love a retro style, I would suggest the ‘Mexico 66 SD’ from Onitsuka Tiger. For the skater girl, I would stick to the Vans ‘Old Skool’ and for the progressive sneakerhead, who wants to try something a little different, give the PUMA ‘Tsugi Evoknit X Naturel’ a go.

PUMA

Throughout my teens, I experimented with a variety of brands, silhouettes, colourways and even customised my own. When I reached an age where I could wear men’s sneakers, I jumped for joy. This was the moment I had been waiting for - back then all the best releases and colourways were only available for men. When I finally moved to London, I began to meet like-minded people and fellow collectors via various sneaker events and forums. That is also where I met the founder of Big Eyes Little Soles, the UK’s first female sneaker blog. The blog started over seven years ago, creating a space for female sneakerheads in the male-dominated market.

The Rum Kitchen George Nelson

What’s the leading cocktail everyone wants right now? The bestseller right now is called the ‘Rude Boy’, which has two types of rum – Gosling 151 and Wray & Nephew. It’s all the things that represent The Rum Kitchen – colourful, strong and in your face. Gosling 151 is 75% proof, so this cocktail is rocket fuel, and the perfect way to kick-start your night out.

What’s your favourite drink of all time? It has to be a Negroni. It’s a classic and a beautiful drink with just the right balance of flavours. It represents everything a cocktail should be. Where else do you like to drink in Carnaby? Cahoots is a cool cocktail bar in an old ‘Speakeasy’ style. It’s a fun bar to go to.

The Rum Kitchen

Raise the Bar

Cahoots Michele Venturini

What’s popular on your cocktail list? The Vera Lynn is a big hit at the moment. It’s a gin-based cocktail and it comes in a glass with the face of Vera Lynn on it, back when she was a singer who entertained the troops. Another favourite is the Ginger Rogers.

What’s special about Cahoots? It really is something

unique. It’s not just about the drink and service; it’s the whole atmosphere and experience. It’s like taking a step back in time to the 1940s, and as you come in it looks like an old disused Underground station. The drinks menu is done like a 1940s newspaper.

Dirty Bones Pira Tejasakulsin

What do your customers enjoy drinking the most? The favourite is usually the Top Dog, with Ketel One vodka, Chambord raspberry liqueur, strawberry, lemon and prosecco. It’s quite light, so it goes well with our heavier dishes like our mac & cheese or beef short ribs. Another popular one is the Mutt’s Nuts.

What’s your personal favourite on the drinks menu? It’s the Bow Down Peaches. There’s a little bit of favouritism there because it’s my creation. The name was suggested from a tasting session we held for some of our loyal customers. They really enjoyed that night! Where do you like to eat and drink in Carnaby? I like Disrepute in Kingly Court, for an innovative cocktail list and a beautifully designed basement bar.

Dirty Bones

With an abundance of great places to drink in Carnaby’s Kingly Court, we hear from the makers and shakers of the top tipples on offer.

Words Tom Bottomley

Señor Ceviche

Señor Ceviche Luca Biagini What marks Señor Ceviche out from the rest? We have a pisco cocktail bar. Pisco is a clear Peruvian brandy distilled from grapes. We do special cocktails like our Pisco Sour, which is actually the most popular in Peru. It’s very simple and refreshing with interesting flavours, and it’s my favourite one to make.

Where do you like to drink?

I like to go to Dirty Bones, I usually drink a Negroni, or an Old Fashioned. What are the secrets of making a great cocktail? Always use the finest spirits, perfect measures and fresh produce of the highest quality. Then you can’t go wrong.

Made to Measure

Carnaby has a long-standing association with tailoring, and some of the old guard are still making sharp suits at 26 Kingly Street. They’ve made for Savile Row’s finest and for famous faces galore.

Words Tom Bottomley

In 12 separate rooms over four floors at 26 Kingly Street there are master craftsmen at work, some holding secrets of the stars that they’ve handmade bespoke suits and coats for. Timothy Sheehan, now aged 73 and about to retire, says: “I’ve been around here working for Savile Row shops since 1959. I’ve made for a lot of famous people in the past, such as Paul McCartney, Elton John, Eric Clapton, Rex Harrington and Robert Mitchum back in the 1960s. Through Tommy Nutter on Savile Row, I also made the suit for Jack Nicholson playing The Joker in the 1989 Batman film. The purple morning jacket I made for him just went for £65,000 at auction.” Coincidentally, another tailor, Peter Neliniopis, also made for another

actor who played The Joker in a later Batman film, The Dark Night. He says: “I made the tuxedo suit for the late actor, Heath Ledger, for the red carpet film premiere, and they sent me a picture of him wearing it which I still have on my wall in the workshop. The suit looks great.” Neliniopis has been a tailor in the Carnaby area for 45 years. “I still enjoy tailoring very much. You have an end product – something you’ve created by hand from scratch. It’s very satisfying. It’s not just putting all the pieces together and that’s it. You have to make your customers really look the part.” Carlos Ochoe, who runs the BC Tailors family business, believes there’s a new-found interest in

suits and sharp dressing. “There’s a real trend for tailoring again at the moment. A lot of younger guys are getting in to wearing nice suits and smart coats for the first

time. There’s also a new breed of tailors coming through.”

Kishore Premchand learnt his trade in Mauritius, and has been tailoring in Carnaby for 24 years. His customers have included Tom Jones and the late, great George Michael. tailoring in Carnaby since 1965. He says: “I used to make suits in the 1960s for a lot of the original Mods, who would seek out the best tailors in the Carnaby area. I was amongst the first main tailors to come to see for the right look and fit.” Even to this day Then there’s Franco Santoro, who’s been

He made Roger Moore’s dinner suit for the 1983 Bond film ‘Octopussy’, and lets slip he’s doing the suits for the next Bond film too. He also recently made Johnny Depp’s suit for the ‘Murder on the Orient Express’ remake. “Back in the day, I even made Ralph Lauren’s personal suits and coats. Sometimes he’d rip them down and use the style for his own collection.” Hannah Rees, 29, is one of two current apprentices learning their tailoring skills from old hand Lagu at 26 Kingly Street. She’s also a leading light

in the new wave of women tailors coming through the ranks. Rees says: “There’s a massive new- found interest in learning the craft of good tailoring. I was originally a fabric designer, but I wanted to learn more about the construction side. I can now handmake a jacket from scratch. It’s a skill that no-one can ever take away from you. As long as you know how to make something from scratch, then you’re always going to know how to alter it. I’d love to have my own tailoring shop one day.” Aside from at 26 Kingly Street, there’s a great deal of tailoring still going on in Carnaby. At 11 Newburgh Street there’s Peckham Rye, and even Ben Sherman at 50 Carnaby Street now offers a made- to-measure suit service.

Peckham Rye co-owner, David Walker, believes young men are discovering sharp tailoring once again, as a means of individuality. “Men in their twenties are now wanting to have a suit made so they stand out for all the right reasons. It’s great to see, and we hope this is the beginning of a suit resurgence. They also seem to be getting more adventurous, and are pushing the boat out by buying a more fitted suit, with a three-or-four- button double-breasted

years, I’ve done updated Mod tailoring looks for Paul Weller, Bradley Wiggins and actor Martin Freeman. It’s more about bringing back the spirit of ‘Modernism’, as things evolve and move on, which is very significant to what Carnaby Street was built on - just good contemporary menswear.”

jacket. It’s a bit more military-looking, but it looks fantastic.”

Down at 2 Marshall Street, you’ll find Soho ‘face’, tailor and designer, Mark Powell, who’s made suits for icons such as Mick Jagger, David Bowie and Bryan Ferry. He says: “In more recent

Do Good

From sustainable seafood to a super green highway, read all about Carnaby’s charity and environment initiatives.

Sustainable Seafood Did you know that Britain exports approximately 80% of its crab to the rest of Europe and Asia? The people at CLAW Carnaby certainly do – with a mission to revalue British seafood. By taking out the middlemen, they deal directly with fishermen to bring the best possible crab and lobster from Salcome, trout from Hampshire and oysters from Colchester. Dive in! Buzzing for Bees’ Needs Welcome to the super green highway. Have you seen the 700 hanging baskets, window-box displays and planters whilst you’ve been out and about in Carnaby? As part of the Wild West End project, these nectar-rich flowers make Carnaby a paradise for pollinators. By supporting Bees’ Needs, which celebrates and protects London’s bee population throughout the year, Carnaby is increasing the access to food and shelter bees need to survive.

Be CALM at M.C. Overalls M.C. Overalls is no stranger to creative collaborations and doing good. The brand is partnered with the award-winning charity Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM), a charity dedicated to preventing male suicide, the single biggest killer of men under the age of 45 in the UK. In November 2017, music fans gathered in the Newburgh Quarter to celebrate Torch Songs, to hear stripped-back acoustic performances from the likes of The Boxer Rebellion, Gengahr, Isaac Gracie and Lewis Watson. Watch this space for more events in 2018. Green Apple Award Carnaby’s project to increase recycling and combat waste sent to landfill has been awarded a Green Apple Award. One of the successes was in food recycling; introduced in 2015, this went from 1% of total waste to 20% in 2017. Did you know that food waste can be used for energy production or to create bio-fertilisers?

This season, beauty is about expressive colour, fresh skin and embracing individual beauty.

Get the Look Bright colours rule with a rebellious and imperfect application, and a natural skin finish that lets freckles Words Grace Ellington 2 Start with M.A.C ’s Studio Face and Body Foundation applied with your fingers in a massaging technique.

4 Cover girl Leili is wearing Benefit ’s GoGo Tint on her lips and cheeks. Bringing the colour central and low on the cheek is a youthful and flattering way to wear it, and the tint creates a sheer, rosy flush on the lips. Apply in both areas with your ring finger in a patting motion. Finish the lips with a touch of M.A.C ’s Mineralize in Lightscape on your Cupid’s bow to enhance the shape and subtly plump your pout.

5 I added a little dimension to Leili’s eye socket with Urban Decay ’s Ultimate Basics palette, before adding a bright white eyeliner wing. A cat-eye might seem more of a sultry autumn/ winter look, but in pure white it takes on a new form. Too Faced ’s Sketch Marker accentuates a feline shape and opens the eye.

and other quirks shine creating a playful look whilst keeping it fresh.

3 For the areas that need a little more coverage, try a mini buffing brush and cream concealer. I like the small domed brush from Skinnydip ’s Tequila Sunrise contour set with Benefit ’s Boi-ing Airbrush Concealer.

1 Before I start any look, I always spend at least ten minutes on skin. Pixi ’s cult favourite Glow Tonic is a gentle exfoliating toner that will help keep your skin soft, smooth and clean.
