Elaine Kasperek Unity in Communication: BICSI’s Inclusive Journey In questioning the need for additional labels, we confront the very essence of unity within the communication industry. Do these labels break down barriers, or do they inadvertently build more walls that further divide us? Drawing on over three decades in this industry, I have never viewed my gender as a weaker or less deserving category. Despite the acknowledgment of pay inequality, I have never felt that my position was a mere checkbox based on my gender. The prevailing narrative suggests that women often remain on the sidelines or hesitate to raise their hand, fueled by a fear of rejection. However, it is crucial to challenge the unfair pigeonholing of women into predefined roles – labeled as ‘Women in this’ or ‘Women in that.’ While working in a male-dominated industry, the drive to persist should not be exclusive to women but should resonate universally.
